Long Term Handgun Storage
 

I have several handguns that I feel are collector pieces and will never shoot them. I have them cleaned and stored in my temperature controlled safe. However, on occasion I see light surface corrosion on some of my all metal handguns. It could be the type of steel or lack of protection on certain steel parts, but I doubt it is too much or not enough oil, fingerprints, etc. As a result, I was thinking ..... what if I store each handgun (in a silicon sock) using a vacuum pack sealer? Removing air and sealing it would seem to eliminate any moisture and chance of surface corrosion.

Does anyone use a vacuum sealer to store their handguns? Is there a reason not to do this? I would appreciate your comments. Thanks

Seems like a bad idea. Any moisture that is not pulled out will cause rust.

Consider BreakFree Collector or a similar material specifically intended for long term storage.

Cosmoline and antirust paper wraps have been used for years, but can be messy and tough to remove.

Or consider fixing the moisture problem in your vault. Perhaps you need more than temperature control. Maybe add in dessicants of some sort.

I have a friend with old guns, basicly unfired and new in box, over 50 years old, and they are wrap in a type of thick plastic/wax paper clear, and have some kind of oil, made for gun storage "cosmoline"?

A good waxing with Renaissance Wax will help keep them protected.

Don't seal in a plastic bag.
Gun sock with a bag of dissicant.

I also leave a bowl of crystal kitty litter in the safe.
You might want to try this. Check it after a week. If it's really brown. You have to much humidity in your safe.

Remove wood grips, dip in a bucket of oil, seal in a heavy 6 mil plastic bag.
