Experiences with Ruger PCC

What are your experiences with the Ruger PCC 9mm?

I'm thinking about getting one, primarily for my wife. Is hoping that the rifle will be easier to handle and reduce recoil, compared to a Glock pistol. Also figured the 9mm in a rifle won't be too loud. Will add a red dot to it if we get it to make it even simpler to use.

I was reading and looking at videos online, and it seems the recoil is more that people expected. Also it seems pretty heavy, so not sure on easy handling.

I like the takedown portion, as the 10/22 takedown is simple to pack and take on trips instead a larger rifle bag/case.

Personally I will probably just stick to the ARs, but I think the noise and operation of an AR may be a bit intimidating for her. Though I will definitely use the PCC if it is fun.

I will probably start her with the 10/22 with red dot and see how she likes it.

It's a fun puff gun. I got it more as a novelty as I wanted one for the collection, as well as if they make one in .45 I'll get one. Wife should love it, its lightweight and accurate. Throw a red dot on it and a run and gun course and she'll be happy.

WWDHD? 08-04-2021 10:05 AM

I like mine. Lots of fun but beware- you'll burn through a lot of ammo shooting this thing. :25:
If you like the Ruger 10/22 you'll like the PCC as well. Lots of similarities.
About the only thing I don't like about it is it's a bit on the difficult side as far as cleaning goes- at least if you want to do a really detailed clean up. But that's very subjective- it's just a bit more involved to clean than most of my other guns.
If you have lots of Glock magazines it's a no brainer- get one and have fun. Good luck.

sigstroker 08-04-2021 10:17 AM

That's the key in kali - being able to use hi-caps without a stupid fin grip. Assuming you have Glock hi-caps, and who doesn't?

As for it being "not too loud", it's still a 9mm and you still need ear-pro.

FNGGlock 08-04-2021 10:50 AM

Thanks guys, the use of Glock mags definitely appeals to me.

It seems to be easier to clean than the 10/22 where you have the punch out the buffer pin. Definitely not was easy as a Glock, but looks easier than an AR for sure.

The weight is a bit of a concern as it weighs more than an AR carbine. Will have to start her with the 10/22 and see how it goes first. At least the operation is very similar (probably easier with mag changes on the PCC).

damon1272 08-04-2021 11:44 AM

I hate mine. It is a bullet hose and runs through too many rounds when I shoot it. Other than that it is great.

Starslinger 08-04-2021 11:53 AM

The PC Carbine is a good gun, but I replaced my PC Carbine with a CZ 512 in 22 magnum. The CZ looks better and weighs less. 22 magnum from a rifle has almost the same energy as 9mm from a pistol. Very low recoil also. I love my CZ 512.

The links above helped me to tune my Ruger PC. It is a heavy rifle so I suggest a sling. If you mount a dot site on top you will need a cheek riser on the buttstock, I did. 124gr shot softer than 147gr. I made up some 115gr but haven't had a chance to shoot them. Good luck have fun. My 2 cents.

I think they are super accurate and super handy. Very easy to shoot out to 100 yards standing to take very quick shots. Recoil is nothing to be concerned about for kids or a wife IMHO. Take-down does make it really easy to pack, but I would have bought one regardless. Featureless and Glock mags... sold. The weight goes to the superior quality of receiver and barrel IMHO. If you want a 9mm, it is a good one.

Great carbine, like mine

crufflers 08-04-2021 1:41 PM

This is the gun (pistol or rifle) that I keep picking back up at the range and shooting "one more mag" through over and over because it is a blast. If I want to concentrate on other guns or conserve 9mm... I do not take it.

Bugman1 08-04-2021 1:45 PM

Great gun but as been stated, it is heavy and I've found that first time/infrequent shooters tend to not like it so much because of this. Id say say recoil is negligible and not an issue, and accuracy is fantastic with the iron sights. glock mag capability is a plus and cleaning in a breeze.

tldr:

Pro:
Great accuracy
Cleaning/take down
Minimal recoil

Cons:
Heavier
Destroys your 9mm stockpile

This.

I suspect Ruger PCC carbines might be responsible for a high percentage of the shortage of 9mm across the USA. It sure has taken a bite out of my ammo cashe.

El Gato 08-04-2021 2:09 PM

I like mine alot. It's converted to glock mags and left hand bolt/mag release.
I've shot it with S&B 115gr from a bench at 100 yds and got a 4 in group for the last 8 rds I had in my magazine. I carry it in the ruger backpack on trips and can assemble it very quickly once I get to it. My carry handgun is for between contact and getting to the "rifle" as is the conventional wisdom.

subscriber 08-04-2021 2:17 PM

Felt recoil of this 9 mm carbine is more than you might expect, because it has a blowback action. That said, the felt recoil is comparable to that of a .223 AR-15. So, in the absolute sense, negligible.

Kokopelli 08-04-2021 2:38 PM

Love mine. The recoil is not sharp. 147 grain ammo is subsonic so not real loud. With 115 and 124 grain projectiles, it's pretty sporty with an increase of 200 FPS or so. The manual says it will eat any ammo, including +P. I run the Ruger mag well adapter and Ruger SR9 freedom week magazines.

Of course I always wear muffs but I have to say- when I shoot mine I hear more of the action cycling than the gun shot itself.

Wordupmybrotha 08-04-2021 3:23 PM

Can practice indoors with it, whereas can't use an AR in most indoor ranges.

It's not heavy.
I wouldn't be dissuaded from buying it because it's not a take down rifle, considering that the frequency of someone taking a take-down rifle on a backpacking trip is abysmal.

axhoaxho 08-04-2021 4:15 PM

Wife and I both have our PCC. We customized ours to our own liking, and that was part of the fun.

For my PCC, I went full-banana and put the whole set of Midwest Industries parts on it -- 14" M-Lok hand guard, red dot side-mount (and PA microdot,) QD spacer plate, and bolt handle. I also used the MCarbo extractor/pins and shock buffer.

For my wife, she went for KISS and lightweight.... kept the original synthetic hand guard and stock, and just mounted a light to it.

Both of ours use Glock magazines, and both are fun to shoot. We both like ours.

People say that about silencers, and I think that's horse-puckey too. I can't hear the action on my 9mm AR with a silencer.

Scratch705 08-04-2021 4:40 PM

the weight isn't too bad for short time frame shooting it. i mean if you gotta carry it for a few hours, then yeah the weight sucks. but shooting 10 rounds with a minute or two break before the next 10 round mag? the weight is nothing.

if you are that concerned with the weight, just have your wife bench shoot it.

all i have done to mine is mount a fastfire 3 and extended charging handle. i didn't need a cheek riser.

example of what the fastfire looks like for me (not mine, as i have no pictures of my setup)
https://external-content.duckduckgo....jpg&f=1&nofb=1

the only difference is i do not have that cheek pad nor the muzzle brake.

I have one, Pros=I have a Glock 17 so compatible with magazines and ammo, break down feature making it easy to carry, it shoots nice with a tight grouping, it doesn't have the so called evil features etc. But with the ability to do a lot of what an AR can do.

Cons=not real great after 100 yrd or so, it is heavy and feels bulky

buy a taser

What can you do with a Taser with a dead battery? How many shots do you have when your battery is not drained? Do you have one? Why do you recommend them? Just curious.

How far does a taser shoot? What model would defend a home from multiple invaders?

And how this is relevant ?

I found that the PCC did have more recoil than I would anticipate for a heavy carbine. But it wasn't that bad. I also found that iron sights is one of my favorite iron sights/peep sights I have on all my long arms. I don't know why but I can acquire my target very easily with this set of iron sights.

micpib1 08-04-2021 5:41 PM

I love mine, I have found it very accurate and fun to shoot. When the family goes with me, my PC9 is the first one that everyone wants to shoot. JH

I own both the 9mm and .40 old PC rifles. Yes they are a bit heavy, but, accurate as he ll. The .40 is equipped with the GR sights and the 9 is equipped with a red dot. Both are tack drivers, but only take Ruger mags.

I always wanted one and came close to buying them a few times over the years for $600-$800. My P95 is so old now I’m glad I get to use Glock mags… but I do have a bunch of Mecgar 17’s for that old P series. When the new PCC came out it was an overdue dream gun to some people. I got two from out of state before they made it here in any numbers.

That’s fine… good opportunity to say $50 spent on a new Taser battery is better spent on 50 rounds of HST and a Glock mag. OK those are old prices.

I’ve had Tasers… they are probably better than a sharp stick.

BuckshotBob 08-04-2021 9:27 PM

I enjoy shooting my Ruger PCC, however something that did surprise me was the weight of the gun and also the recoil for shooting 9mm and being so heavy. I do like the iron sights but ever since I bought a PTR 9R I prefer to shoot that since it is a lot smoother.

smle-man 08-05-2021 4:40 AM

It is my house carbine. I put fiber optic sights on it, a streamlight, and a flash suppressor. The only issue I've had with it is the charging handle works loose after about 50-60 rounds. I put some blue locktite on the threads and stopped that problem. I run a patch through the bore and wipe out the receiver and bolt face with the bolt locked back and that is as much cleaning as it gets.

I like it.

Kokopelli 08-05-2021 5:25 AM

Went shooting with a couple friends who are retired LEOs. They loved shooting my Ruger PC carbine, consistently hitting the 135 yard steel at our range. I like to think of mine as a California legal MP40 Schmeisser. :D

I swapped sides on both of mine before I shot them and added blue Loctite then... and eventually a few other places. Receiver block under handguards I think... those come loose. Both mine were shot loose when I replaced handguards.

splithoof 08-05-2021 4:20 PM

I use one as a teaching tool for new shooters. It loves the cheapest, dirtiest Russian ball ammunition to be had, and everything else as well. Most accurate load for it is Federal 147 HST. I put a Leupold Deltapoint RDS on it for ease of use at night. With a Glock 33 round stick, it makes a handy little carbine for the house.

D.A.V.I.D. 08-05-2021 4:32 PM

Every new shooter I let shoot mine likes it a lot. They’re reliable take mags from the greatest gun ever made and are cheap.

i should check that.

currently the charging handle is the only screw that comes loose due to me swapping out to an enlarged version. (i've already forgotten from who)

i was going to blue loctite, but i keep thinking that since you have to take that screw out to strip the gun to clean it would be a hassle to have to keep cleaning the loctite off the screw and reapply each time you clean.
