 WOW

2 days since posted and ZERO bids!

$2100 reserve :rofl2:

ETA: To clarify, I'd love to own a Python, including that mistreated specimen.

It would be promptly refinished, and I sure as hell wouldn't be paying collectors prices for it.

I like it and would love to own it!

After I refinished it. That is puke colored.

I prefer blued to the green. And I wouldn't pay $2100 and have to have it refinished.

So no, at that price, I wouldn't want it.

Looks like a wannabe military revolver from over 100 years ago. Someone ruined a perfectly good firearm.

I added a poll answer. There are some of us that own refinished pythons and shoot them. I would own it and shoot it but Green!!!!!!! Yuk!

I would venture this was a way for the owner to mask the fact they didn't take proper care of the pistol and ruined the original finish.

Or there was a LOT of beer involved in the decision.

I'd pay like 600 for it, and would shoot it all the time. But probably not much more than that. My two Pythons I sold recently weren't as nice to shoot as my Dan Wesson.

Wow! I'm surprised by so many of the replies!

I have several rare Pythons, some are safe-queens, others are shooters, and some beaters, but I REALLY like this one. It's not all that crazy of an idea or scheme, and was likely influenced by the "Birdsong" Smith & Wesson Model 629-5 that the S&W PC came out with several years ago.

If you look at the background color, it's very off - so I'm betting the photos are making it look greener than it actually is; I bet it's more olive-drab in person.

Some things just are not meant to be cerakoted

I honestly don't understand the point of duracoating/cerakoting. decorating and painting guns? It's the whole Barbie doll for men effect.

Couldn't the same be said about any coating whether that be bluing, nickel plating, chroming, case-coloring, hard-chroming, parkerizing, polishing stainless steel, or doing a gun in camo?

It serves the same purpose as any of the above to protect the gun from rusting or simply be a nice surface-coat what's the difference; if the duracoating/cerakoting were black or gray, would you think the same merely because that is a "business" color?

While I agree with you by personal preference, I think it's rather cool when I see people use unconventional color-coatings on guns.

Considering that the Colt Pythons came out of the factory with some of the most beautiful finishes ever put on a modern production revolver, I certainly hope that the seller's gun was horribly scarred by acid or fell into a woodchipper to warrant it's new paint job.

Regardless, to each his own. I'm not a fan but someone out there loves it and hopefully buys it.

I'd buy it in a heartbeat if it was half the opening bid. Then I would repaint it black and shoot the hell out of it. "Exorcist puke green" just doesn't do it for me.

the only thing I could say is that I hope the Python under that hideous coating is a stainless one, so that the coating can be stripped without having destroyed a Colt bluing job.

Assuming the original blueing was worn or damaged. It's still an ugly color.

nickel plate
10-27-2014, 7:12 AM
It's a later model, single pinned front sight but that's still not an excuse for what was done. We've had a couple color enhanced finished Pythons show up here but they came with before, during and after photos-one of which if I remember correctly was dark coated, had a replacement non-fluted cylinder, gold accents and ivory grips-looked outstanding.
Just goes to show that if you start out with a badly rusted Python, it can be revived into a quality piece of workmanship.

I'm going with the theory that it was pretty beat up,so he coated it.

I don't think anyone in there right mind would do that to a $2000+ collectors gun on purpose.

There was a time when a Colt Python was just another gun. Many were carried daily, stored in the tackle box, stashed under the car seat along with old coins, lint, junk-food trash and wayward-bubblegum, EVEN SHOT ON A REGULAR BASIS!!

In the mid-1980s, people could not get rid of them fast enough to trade in for the new-fandangled "Glock" everybody wanted, getting $150 to $200 towards a tupperware encased Wonder-9. ( I know, because we had a gun store at the time, taking in trades exactly as described above. )

And so many were made, that the production numbers of many common models do not justify their inflated pricing. Maybe some character's use of the gun in a silly TV show about the undead is driving inflated interest? Somewhat like the Model 29 craze after Dirty Harry in the 1970s, Wildeys after Death Wish 3, Bren Tens after Miami Vice, or the "Procelain Glock 7" after Die Hard - and so on?

Ridiculous. Google a search on Gunbroker for "Colt Python" for guns only, not parts, not accessories, and more than 300 active listings come up. Do the same for keywords such as Semmerling, American Eagle Luger, Triple-Lock, Registered Magnum, Pocket 9, or Mateba and you get a fraction pittance of that number - if any at all.

That the finish of this Python was probably long-gone and hopeless, enticing someone to coat it. I see this as putting it back into useful service, as was intended - not some safe queen that never sees the light of day or the outside of a safe. While those have their place for a very rare Python made in production quanties of 3 numbers or less, not EVERY Python is deserving of such purgatory.

It's a bigger shame that so many Colt Pythons, and yes there are MANY (when you simply look at how long it was made, and how many were made each year) - that so many common, pedestrian models of the Python sit unused like some type of clandestine virgin even when they have been previously shot before, on many occasion.

For what? Investments? As heir looms? As masturbation material to only be ogled in photos on the internet and handled with white cotton gloves? It's simply not that rare nor warranted.

I have some rare cars in my collection. But none compare to those in Jay Leno's collection. One thing I learned from Jay when talking with him once about him driving his Duesenberg Model J on the 101 (when I saw that while driving next to him in a my Chevelle, both on our way to the same car show - I was stunned), or rambling over the hill on Coldwater in his Stanley Steamer, Model A, or Jaguar XK-140, or bumping into him at AutoBooks in Burbank in a Bugatti - is that he has the benefit of being alive and enjoying these cars as intended, even if it means giving them an unoriginal coat of paint; to get them on the road is the important thing, to enjoy the actual driving experience first-hand is the key.

So if this gets it back out on the range, rather than being neglected further, or worse, turned into a "Gun Buy Back" or allowed to rust into oblivion - so be it.

I approve.
