View Full Version : Flat trajectory 7mm-08 loads
I am on a mission to make up a flat trajectory load for my 7mm-08, to be used on deer max range 300 yards. I am thinking barnes 110 gr. Anyone else go down this road?

I have done some load testing with the 110TTSX in my Tikka 7-08.
RL15--49.5grs
3322/3322/3336/3377/3333
Low3184FPS--High3336FPS---ES14FPS---Ave3329FPS-----SD5
H380----53grs
3225/3244/3184/3254/3236
L3184FPS---H3254FPS---ES70FPS----Av3228FPS----SD27
Varget---46.5grs
3164/3120/3137/3154/3162
L3120FPS---H3164fps---ES44FPS----Av3147fps----SD18
I use mag primers in all loads. The top load was most accurate. The 110TTSX will work well for you.

awesome what does "SD" mean?

"SD" = standard deviation. In simpler terms, about two thirds of the values fall within that deviation range. Ave=3228 SD= 27 means about 2/3 of the velocities are within 27 fps. A smaller SD means a very tight grouping of velocites. Less than 1% of the average is typically pretty good.

What twist is your barrel? 9.5 inches? I wonder if my Mark-X wouldn't like this bullet. I usually shoot the 140 grian ttsx at 2700+ fps. I wonder how a 110 at 3200+ would buck the wind after 500 yards compared to the 140?

It should shoot fine in your rifle.
This is a hunting bullet. So:
Rarely will you get or should take a shot at 500+ yards.
Usually the heavier bullet will buck wind at long range better----However---
The 7-08 will not give enough speed to give reliable expansion(performance) at that long of ranges....Probably with either bullet.
At more reasonable ranges the 110TTSX will perform better when pushed fast.
The 110TTSX will preform like a 143 grain lead core bullet.
"MY" choice would be to use the 110TTSX and not try shots at 500+ if possible. I have hunted many years and killed many animals. Very few have been over 400-500 yards. Most have been under 150 yards where the 110TTSX would have the advantage over the 140TTSX. "I" would prefer the 110TTSX out to 300-400 yards. Beyond that I would want to use a different cartridge such as 25-06/ 257W/264mag/7mag 300mag.
At 500+ yards my concern is that the 140TTSX at 2700MV will not have enough speed to expand and preform as needed.

for hunting I dont plan to shoot much over 100 yards (plans...). No, my 140 grain TTSX doubles as my long range target shooting orund because frankly, I just cannot and do not get out very much to do any long range shooting. It's already developed, the price difference is not much different than berger bullets, the availability is about the same, and they seem to hold up to at least 700 yards, which is about as far as I have taken them. So it's ok if they don;t have any oomph past a couple hundred yards. I'm just wondering if they will fly even straighter at 700. Whether I can take them to, say, 900 yards.
Truly, I shoot maybe 50 rounds a year beyond 100 yards. it's OK to use barnes bullets, and to double the load development with a hunting round for MPBR use. So It's OK if it's not optimal for 700 yards compared to berger, I just wonder if the 110 is more optimal than the 140.

OK---For target shooting the 140TTSX will have an advantage over the 110TTSX. The Berger bullets will out perform either TTSX at long range.
I was mistaken. I thought you were wanting to hunt at 500+ yards.

That sounds a little on the light side.
First of all ... what twist barrel are you going to use?
Just off hand ... for most non-magnum 7mm, especially the 7-08, 140 grains seems to be near the magic bullet weight number.

Wishful thinking for me. Thanks.
I am going to try the 120 TTSX and H4350 in my 7mm-08. 2900+ shouldn't be too difficult and based on JBM should be good to 450 energy wise.
Going to try the 150 TTSX in my 7RM along with some R22.
