View Full Version : Wrong Bushing in Resize Die???

Received a new set of 9mm Luger dies and loaded in my press today (an LNL AP). I'm not going to state the die brand so there is no bashing from me. I'm relatively new to reloading and this is my first run at 9mm (I've been loading 223).
So, shell on shell plate, advance, case is stuck when 3-5 mm into the resize die. Cases wet tumbled. Lubed with Dillon case lube. I double lubed. I triple lubed. Yes, they were dry before touching the press. Cleaned the hell out of the die. Lubed the die. Tried OneShot. All the same. The non-sized cases fit in my Dillon 9 mm case gauge perfect. The cases go straight into die so the shell plate is aligned.
So what I did was size cases 1-2 mm at a time where I could get the stuck case free with the press. Ended up resizing 5 mixed headstamps this way. Low and behold, case mouth measures out at 0.3735 ± 0.0001 on all of them. Holy crap, that is the SAAMI spec for 380 Auto and almost 0.01 off from 9mm. The die and box are clearly marked 9mm Luger. The die mouth is ~0.3820. That ain't 9mm! Is it?
Did I get a bad die? How can heavily lubed cases (yes they were dried) not even enter the resize die (yes straight) without sticking when they fit the case gauge, unless the die is bad?
You have the wrong sizer ring in there.

I'm going assume that this is your first attempt at pistol reloading. Now I may be wrong bc I don't reload 9mm, only .40. But the resizing die is supposed to size smaller than bullet diameter, your case expander die will open it back up to accept a new bullet, much like the expander ball on your .223 dies.
As for your cases getting stuck.... can't help you there, I would suggest carbide sizer, don't have to worry about lube. Rcbs sells them for like 40 bucks for a 3 die set, well worth it

As this story unfolds, I hope it does not come out that you learned your reloading techniques from you-tube and elsewhere online and that this is your first press...
Don't worry about brand bashing. That is for later. What brand of dies were these and where did you get them from? What KIND of dies also, OH and what is the exact caliber of them? Do they say 9mm Luger? What brand again? Don;t ever be afraid that you are brand bashing here because we like to know what brands end users report the problems with, it could be that you are part of a BAD lot or batch and now 42 others have returned their dies in for replacements, but you are stuck here wondering what happened and all because you are too PC to name the brand. Makes no sense. So you either want help or you are trolling then...
This takes me to my next question, LUBE? Really? So then you have a set of steel dies? Most folks and by most I mean just about everyone, and by that I mean the vast majority of them in here do NOT lube while resizing with carbide pistol dies. There is no need to, but the few that do report that it makes thigns smooth as butter. AND although butter and bacon are two B words that I like to have around MY press, I can not bring myself to lube my cases when I am using carbide. BUT, It would SURE be nice to know what brand of dies these were so that we could look up any recalls or major/known bugs and workarounds...
And finally, did you put the 9mm LUGER resizer on your single stage press and try a shell or two in that? What are the results? It could be that press that you are using. Maybe it is voodoo woodoo bad doodoo...

All that over a defective die?
OP, you got a bad die- mis-assembled at the factory with the wrong ring. Stuff happens.
Contact the retailer or the manufacturer Monday.......

Are you sure you bought "9mm Luger" dies? .380acp is also known as .380 Auto, 9mm Browning, 9mm Corto, 9mm Kurz, 9mm Short, 9×17mm and 9 mm Browning Court. With the correct dies, there is no reason to lube 9mm Luger brass at all.

It's a bad die. Confirmed by other means. Thanks all.
Die is stamped 9MM Luger and so is the box. Other dies in the set are flawless. I'm never putting "new to reloading" in a post again. One year of 223 and part of a reloaders club and reloading 9mm at the club should have negated the "new" a while ago.

Then contact the seller or the manufacturer. I know I once bought a used set of Dillion .45LC dies and it came with a .45acp sizing die. The seller informed me that he was told they were the same thing. After I insisted that they were not the same and he should cll Dillon to verify, he ended up buying a brand new one from Dillon and sending it to me.

It is no shame to be NEW to reloading (although you are not really new and since you started with .223 and are in a club I would not say you are new, just unexperienced in an area or two, small areas though and we all gotta troubleshoot), I was once NEW to reloading, then I reloaded 50 9mm rounds and I was promoted to Captain and then when I switched to 44 mag and started pumping out (OMG this coffee I am drinking tastes like Lucky Charms! Holy ****!) rounds for my Deagle I was promoted to General and finally when I started coming here and reading and getting involved more, I got promoted to Major Dick... ;)
But we all like to have fun SO WHAT DIE SET IS THIS? I AM DIEING (get it?) TO KNOW! TELL ME! You are ONLY delaying the INEVITABLE! I will have mah people put a tail on you to see what store you go to and what dies get returned and I will have the others hack the NSA files and look up your internet orders! please don't make all of those people get into trouble. Just tell us...
I will give you lots of candy if you tell us...
OH wait a sec. I know what die set it is, YOU are refusing to reveal because they are BLUE DIES! And if that info got out, then Brian Enos himself would hunt you down and confiscate all of your stuff and leave you shackeled in pink fuzzy handcuffs. That MUST be it!
Please tell us. Inquiring minds like mine wanna know...
Pistol brass should be pretty easy to resize. Hornady one shot makes everything nice and slick. It is less work on my hand and arm when pumping the BLUE progressive presses. It makes single stage work a little nicer as well. I have many die sets, so I lube and don't worry if they are carbide or not. I don't really need carbide for anything since I lube. The hornady lube can be left on the brass and the ammo shot with the lube in place.
Dillon lube is my choice for rifle brass. It is sticky, so I do tumble after sizing. Hornady one shot did not work well for my rifle brass. Sometimes it worked, but when it didn't, it really sucked.
9mm brass will get sized down a bit and once loaded with bullets, it may end up with a funky shape. Just test it in the case gauge or the barrel to make sure it will fit easily and drop back out when you tip the gauge or barrel upside down.

I read too many die debates to have this influence the blue, red, green, or Lee lovers/haters. It was a rare error in manufacturing that I thought could or would never happen. Whoever I state would turn this into some bash or be conceived as a bash by me. My own pride and the fact I know the issue will be resolved leaves there no reason. The manufacturer is mainstream, high quality and stands behind their product 100% so it is a moot point. No finger pointing from this side. Nope. Not gonna do it.

So I suppose when something works perfectly, you're not going to mention the name of that product either? Regardless, glad you got it sorted. Can get pretty frustrating chasing a problem that rarely, if ever, occurs.

I'll let you play with my puppies if you tell us. I'm not a die snob. I own Lee, Pacific, Hornady, Lyman, CH4D, Dillion, Redding, RCBS, Eagle, Hollywood, M2 Precision and probably a couple more brands that I've forgotten about right now.

Mommy told me not to take candy from strangers. Puppies? I love puppies. Are they in the van?
Ok. I have no bad words as can be seen above, didn't want to be seen as a troll, and I have no intention of saying anything bad about a manufacturer, and I would give credit for a good product. I just hate the press and die "wars" and didn't want my question going that direction. It is a Hornady New Dimension Part #046516.

It would be fun to take that to SHOT to show the factory reps and rib them a little.
BTW, if you need to borrow a 9mm sizing die and are willing to come all the way to Westlake to pick it up, shoot me a PM. The puppies are a couple female 6 week old malamute mixes. They've only been here since Thursday.

HAH! it is HORNADY! I KNEW IT! Imma gonna go tell mom!
;) Now see? That wasn't so bad now was it? I think the idea of Die Wars is a bit hmmm, over stated? We fight over brands but EVERYONE makes mistakes. The fact that they have taken care of you and are sending you a new die is a good thing. (wait they ARE doing that right?) So good for them. I guess I owe you some candy now. I got some cool stuff coming from New England... Where you live and I will park the van in front of yer house? I will even take you to lunch first so we are not strangers... ;)
Honestly though if you had said Dillon it would have been funny, but just an up front laugh, nothing serious because folks make mistakes and even though I talk a lotta crap about Dillon and their cultic following, it aint that they made a mistake, it is how they take care of you and Dillon would be sending you a new die before they even answered the phone. RCBS is great like that too, Hornady I assume is also good and Lee would want proof that they made a mistake first... (and then want you to pay for shipping...) LoL
All good, Now I can go to sleep...

Spoke to Hornady. Great folks and an easy positive discussion. They don't believe it. I wouldn't either. They think the resize ring is loose and canting to the side under pressure. I'm sending it back for them to look at (or put on a shelf for training) and a new one is on the way. I tried hard to keep it. I knew that was never going to happen.
