1-Find a FFL who does SSE.

2-Order it.

3-Have your FFL send a copy of there FFL to DD

4-Once it lands at your FFL have them put a bullet button on it and DROS it.

5-10 days later enjoy it.

Almost correct. Here's the correct procedure:

1) Find a FFL who does SSE
2) Make sure Daniels is good to send it to that CA FFL
3) Pay the transfer fee at your FFL and buy the gun from Daniels
4) The gun already comes into the state with a bullet button installed by Daniels (ensure they're willing to do this)
5) SSE DROS it and you've got it in 10 days

We'd have customers asking if we can install the bullet button after their FFL AR/SSE came in. We could not. The gun cannot be modified like that after it has entered the state. DOJ could get you for "manufacturing" "assault weapons" without the proper licensing. I can't tell you how many times we got FFL ARs in with active mag releases -we had to immediately send them back to where they came from. Sure, it's simple and easy to install a bullet button, but doing so puts us at a large amount of risk should CA DOJ decide they want to throw the book at us. It had better come into the state with a bullet button -if not, it's not legal for a CA FFL to "manufacture" it into a legal rifle from its original "assault weapon" status. Now do some FFLs do this? Yes, but they roll the dice with a lot more risk than most FFLs are willing to do.

OP, this is what you should do. SSE any lower as an AR pistol with a Sig Brace. Order a Daniel's Mk18 upper. That's the most pain-free and easiest way to do this. Your lower won't be a Daniels but it's the upper that matters most here.

Is there any RISK to you--the buyer--if you DROS an AR/AK pistol from these FFL?

FYI - Midway (http://www.midwayusa.com/product/464559/daniel-defense-ar-15-pistol-mk18-a3-upper-receiver-assembly-556x45mm-nato) has the upper in stock.

If it comes into the state already with a bullet button in place I don't see how the FFL or the buyer would be at any risk because that's how it's supposed to be done.

If it comes into the state as an "unregistered assault rifle" and is illegally "modified" by the CA FFL by the installation of a bullet button there are definite risks for the FFL, but I'm not sure about the buyer. In order to import/receive anything with an active mag release the dealer needs to have an assault weapons license with CA DOJ. If they're doing this without one they're in violation of CA law (besides "manufacturing" without proper gunsmith/repair licensing). I don't know if the buyer could be held accountable for this, especially if they didn't know the SSE AR pistol they were buying was "illegally" "modified" with a bullet button AFTER it came into the state. Knowing how the CA DOJ of Harris is right now, I wouldn't feel too good at night having an AR I know came into the state as an "assault rifle" but now is magically fine with a bullet button with no recorded "assault weapon" FFL having officially modified it before importation.

We used to stock our Stags and Sigs in the shop by having them sent from the manufacturer to LAN World in Utah where they'd be modified with a bullet button, then they were sent to our FFL in CA for retail. There is a paper trail showing the legit modification occurred by a properly-licensed go-between. The more documentation the better.

Is it uncommon to SSE a stripped lower?

Not just uncommon--impossible. There's no way a stripped lower meets the overall length or barrel length requirements to be SSE.

I should add, you can PPT an existing pistol lower if you find one for sale.

The DD are nice but spend a few extra $$ and get the LWRC or PWS. Much nicer fit and feel. Just say'n.

Give Phil / AudioPhil a call. Hes my main guy and will go out of his way to help.

This is coming from a guy that has way to many AR pistols, 556 and 308

Happy shooting.

While the LWRC options are nice, I've not been very impressed with the PWS ones.

And this thread is specifically about the Daniel Defense MK18 Pistol. ;)

I'm sure OP already figured it out since this thread is 2mo old but just an FYI that my local gun shop ordered one for me and it came in within 5 days since they are in stock at DD. You should be able to order at any shop that will do basic SSE.

And yes, no sights on my M4A1 or MK18 means another $400 for just iron sights

Sorry to revive such an old thread..

but now that it is 2015, I take it there is no way for me to buy the MK18 as an AR pistol in CA?

What about with an interfamilial transfer as an off roster pistol?

Shovel
11-05-2015, 6:46 AM
Several options to get one:

1. PPT on in the state already.
2. Inter-familial transfer one from out of state.
3. Build one from 80% lower and buy the upper.

I picked one up last year. I'm glad that I did.

Easiest thing is to find a pistol lower in the Marketplace and slap the upper on it. Pistol lowers show up semi frequently and most sellers want about $600 for them.
