I originally posted this in Center fire Semi-auto but realized it's better here.

I just bought a WMD BCG and have a question about go - no go spacers. Can I use the 5.56 tool only and have .223's work just as well with out spacing with the .223 tool? Do I really need to do this on my newly built rifle? Just trying to make sure everything is 100% spot on with my first build...

You need to use the proper too for the barrel you bought. If it says 5.56 then use the 5.56 headspace gauge. Likewise if it says 223.

Yes you need to check headspace on any new rifle you assemble.

Toes, do you have gauges for .223 and also 5.56?

If you look at Brownells' site, the Clymer .223 Remington go gage is the same stock numbers as the 5.56 go gage. As far as I have researched, the go gage is basically the same.

As far as the field gage, I personally use the Colt '5.56' field gage, which is supposed to be pretty close to the NATO/mil field headspace spec.

This combo I use for 5.56 and .223 Wylde.

Ok thanks for the info. I will order the Clymer gauge

I charge $10 to headspace check a rifle.
It might be worth the drive over to my shop rather than buying all the gauges yourself...

If you are in the OC.

I have all 3 gauges. (field, go, no go)

Personally. If you can make it to Randal's. That would be my first stop.
He may well see other things the rest of us would miss.
PLUS he has the tools and know how to fix the problem if one were to arise.
That would be 10 bucks well spent.

Thats me .02 worth.

:( I ordered it before I read this... Now I feel stupid. I did look around and it seams that most Gunsmiths charged $20-$30 for head space check which is why I bought it. Are you a general gunsmith or just AR specialist. I ask cause I have a Taurus 357 I want looked at.

It takes 2-3 different headspace gauges to properly check headspace on a gun so if you only bought one gauge, you are not checking both ends of the acceptable dimensions.

I specialize in semi-auto and bolt action rifles for competition, defensive and law enforcement use.
