I like the LMTs and Larue PredatOBR for a battle rifle style AR-10/LR-308.

Now, if you're looking for a sort of bench, race gun, I'd go for a JP LRP-07.

The other option is to build your own, then buy a $1K optic to go along with it :D

What are you planning to do with the AR10?

Battle rifle and combat optic?

Long range at steel targets?

Precision shooting of tiny groups on paper?

PredatOBR is nice, but unless you find a used one that's significantly discounted off of secondary market pricing, there won't be much of anything left over for an optic.

Keep an eye out for LWRC REPRs. They can be had in the low 3s private party with minimal rounds through or even brand new.

GA Precision GAP-10 (http://www.gaprecision.net/ga-precision-2013-custom-rifles/ga-precision-g.a.-precision-gap-10-.html)

The optic will depend on your use case. Maybe a Vortex Razor HD Gen 2 (http://www.vortexoptics.com/category/razor_hd_gen_II_riflescopes) for tactical or competition, maybe a Vortex Viper PST 6-24 x 50 FFP (http://www.vortexoptics.com/product/vortex-viper-pst-6-24x50-ffp-riflescope-with-ebr-1-moa-reticle) for longer shots.

POF Lower w/SSA-E
DPMS Upper Receiver w/ UBR stock and BCM Charging Handle
Vortex PST 4-16x w/ PEPR Mount

12lbs 8 oz w/mag and shoots easy under MOA without trying. Also recoils like an AK with the gun dialed in.

Just wondering because I always see people pigeon-holing the JP into "race-gun" category and practically dismissing it as battle-capable.

I haven't had a chance to shoot and compare it with the other rifles you listed, that's why I'm asking you for your opinions on the subject.

And my main question was regarding this

Predatobr, GAP10, REPR, SCAR17, JP LRP-07H, lmt mws. My favorites in this order.

It's a prestigious list but the last statement seems to place the JP near the bottom of them. Just was wondering why?

To which you posted this

Which brings me back to the beginning of this post.

I'm not trying to badger and pester you, just trying to draw from your experience with those very fine rifles. You unlike others (at least from what it seems) have experience with these guns. I'm not 100% certain if posters here that recommend one rifle over the other have ever even owned the rifle(s) they are recommending.

OK, I think that's fair to say. Still, a JP (prolly make more of their own stuff than most, I assume that's what you have in mind here) made to your specs is going to be a big wait, too, and it won't fit the OP's criteria.

That was my hesitation to recommend JP in this thread. I think it's a better rifle than the GAP-10, but the 4k limit is way too close to what you're gonna spend (prolly spend almost all 4k after you include tax and shipping) just on the rifle. Cheap glass on a rifle like that would be a crime, imo.

Overall, if you had a competition in several areas between an LRP-07 with some NcStar scope against a GAP-10 with a Vortex Viper PST or Swaro Z5, which do you think would come out on top?

You already have your armament. For what you already have be sure that you have thousands of rounds of ammo and stacks and stacks of mags + replacement part kits.

Preparedness is being prepared with mags and ammo, not some glossy gun without ammo and unobtainable/expensive new mags:

JP ships out faster than one might think and I know they're way faster than Larue or GAP (probably 3 months vs 1-year+).

OK, with the stated budget I'm cheating a little. The JP would leave very little left over for glass.

Out to 150 yards, I think the JP still wins with cheap glass. More than that, picking the middle of the blur will be insufficient.

If you're talking about ready-made-rifles, I think all mfg's will be in the 3+ month wait for the rifle configuration you want. If you go with Larue, GA, or even LMT or POF and many others and you're asking for maybe even a year sometimes.

There are a lot of good uppers made by good companies to be had:

POF and Armalite uppers are in stock @ Rainier. Slap on a LR-308 or AR-10 lower and you got a battle rifle.

You can also basically buy the same materials and build one yourself. For example, JP barrels, BCGs, Bolts, Adj Gas Blocks, and comps are in stock on JP's website. Buy a DPMS (or pick your upper) upper, send it to AR15Barrels and get the upper made and BAM, you have basically a LRP-07 (less the side charging handle). Now, Noveske, LMT, Larue, etc may or may not have certain components available so it'll be hard to "build" a clone of some sort.

I picked up the LMT MWS308 with a NF 2.5-10 x 32. It is a heavy set up but a nice accurate and reliable 308 rifle. I am sure the others mentioned here are comparable so really the only consideration might be DI or gas piston set operation. Both have their pros and cons. If you really want to step up the game well then maybe an HK MR762 but with a good scope you will be well over 4K.

For $4k I would just go with a DPMS build and a quality scope like a Leupold Mark 4, with ammo and accessories. I just bought a PredatOBR BNIB for over $4k but I already have optics for it. At first I was set on the LMT but the quick breakdown of the new OBR is awesome and it's a lot lighter than I thought it would be. In your situation though $3500 for the MWS only leaves $500 which isn't enough imo for a good optic. Build the AR10 from the ground up with everything you want on it for $2k then spend $2k on the optic.

Your battle rifle is heavy and has not BUIS. :P

I think that's why JP was suggested for precision or long range, and nothing wrong with that, because if you want something for closer range you really don't need 308 to get the job done.

I think that's why JP was suggested for precision or long range, and nothing wrong with that, because if you want something for closer range you really don't need 308 to get the job done.

That is not heavy for a .308 or above battle rifle. Possibly too much scope (could use a 1-6x instead), but not too heavy.

LMT308MWS
Got mine for $3k but based on this scenario here.
I would have $1k left, not sure if I can get any good glass at that point.

I was hunting down a PredatOBR 7.62 for a long time and couldn't find it in stock so I got a LMT308 instead and I am very happy with it.

I just never understood the concept of waiting all that time for a rifle that they are simplyhttp://goo.gl/xg5IDb

S&W M&P 10 and Vortex Viper PST. Magnification depends on your intended use. For very long range, the 6-24 FFP will run you about $800. Rifle is $1500 and you can spend another $200 for a free float rail and a replacement flash hider.

That's only $2300 of your budget for a top notch combo.

I would spend 1K on the rifle, $200 on optics, and $800 on ammo. The rest of the money would go toward tactical pants, tan boots, logo'd polo shirts and hats with the logo of the rifle I bought, wrap around sunglasses, and a very heavy plate carrier with molle pouches for all of my tactical needs at the range. Oh, and a big, oversized tactical black watch.

that's what I would do! hahahaha

S&W M&P10 with a Trijicon VCOG 1-6, and the rest on ammo.

I would look at the Christensen Arms CA-10. $3500 doesn't leave you much for glass but I would think about it. http://www.gandermountain.com/modperl/product/details.cgi?i=694515

I'm in such a quandary over this. I thought I had my mind made up on a PredatOBR but the whole "barrel issue" that's going on at LaRue right now really threw a wrench in the works.

How good is that Christensen Arms? I know nothing about them. What does "superior accuracy" mean? Is that a 1 MOA gun? Better? Worse? How is their quality and customer service? Decisions decisions...

My JP shoots less than 1/2-moa with match ammo, maybe it does better to achieve "superior" accuracy.

I glanced through the thread and didn't see this rifle suggested yet. A Sig 716, I have a 516 and love it. The thing is great. Just saying, they make good rifles.

I am a beginner with guns... And the forum ....

Have a few ar 15s, ak.... Shotguns etc... Looking to buy an ar. 10

With about 4k to spend I would live to hear recommendations

Thank u

Probably an SR762 plus a scope for buying a rifle outright.

Or buy good parts and make one myself, spend the rest on optic an ammo

Despite the added expense - my choice is the REPR w/ 16" spiral fluted barrel and NF NXS 2.5X10X42.
