Hi,

I’m going to order a Savage 10fp this week and I’d like to have a pile of goodies waiting for its homecoming. However this is my first accurate rifle and I’d like to have a sanity check for the parts I’m planning on purchasing.

Specifically are the Leupold low rise rings going to give me enough clearance for the Bushnell scope? What about when I eventually upgrade the scope? (once I get good enough for a nice scope the Bushnell is going to my Saiga)

I also know nothing about bipods. I figured I’d get a Harris due to all the positive comments about them. There are 2 types, a solid mount and a hinged mount. I’m not too clear on what difference that makes but I figure a solid mount makes more sense for a long range rifle.

Anything else I should know about?

Bushnell 3-9x40mm Elite 3200.

For the rings and base, there are certainly BETTER ones out there, but if you just want to stay "low cost" then those Leupolds are OK. Regarding which height you'd need, someone else need to confirm for you (I personally shoot R700).

For the Harris Bipod: go with BRM-S model. http://cheaperthandirt.com/81118-4869-722.html
The swivel is for when you sit your rifle on an uneven surface you can level your rifle, so, go with that. The leg-notches made it easy to set specific height, and it deploys much easier. BR height is a personal preference for me.

Get a picatinny base from seekins precision or badger, or even ken farrell. Then get some decent rings from the same vendors, even the burris extreme rings are good. You may want to get a 20moa base, depending on how far you're planning on shooting. It looks like you need to do some more research.

The scope you linked to is not one to get. You're going to want a ranging reticle (ie. mildot or equiv.) and target turrets. The most recommended beginner scope is the bushnell 3200 10x mildot or the supersniper. The bushnell easily wins the bang for the buck between the 2.

Get the SBRM bipod that Jicko linked to. Its a winner and by far the most popular.

ETA: If you got the standard 10fp with the factory stock, plan on getting a new stock. The bell and carlson medalist is awesome for the money.

doesnt the stock stock on the 10FP look like the B&C medalist?

Ok, so I'll get the Harris with the hinged mount.

I believe that the bushnell 3200 10x mildot and the supersniper are fixed power. I'd like something variable as the scope is going to find it's way eventually to my Saiga.

edit: I just read up on the supersniper scopes. They actually sound pretty cool. I think I am going to get one and just leave it on the Savage.

If you're contemplating the supersniper, take a harder look at the 3200 10x. Its more reliable, cheaper, but lacks the tacticool look. You'd be better served putting the difference in cost toward ammo. Practice is going to be what makes the biggest difference. Check this thread here:

I bought the "standard" Savage 10 FP and added a Choate "Ultimate Sniper Stock" (very heavy) and added the Harris swivel bipod. Glass is a Burris 4.5-14x42mm tactical FFII with Burris "signature" rings with an extra 15 MOA elevation.

I have about 10 different 168gr SMK & AMAX loads ready and just finished loading up several 175gr SMK loads and hope to get it out to try it soon. I'd have been out by now (needed to get my car running), but then I lost a section of my home's roof in a recent wind storm... It's always "something" - I swear..

- bell and carlson (medalist #2999-30, tan with black web)
- nikon 6-18x40 buckmaster, niko-plex reticle
- 20moa base, brand undecided
- rings, brand the same as the base
- harris swivel 6-9 or 9-13 bipod

those who are swapping out the stock stock, are you re-bedding at all?

The Choate has two aluminum bedding pillars and the barrel is free-floated...

http://www.drinkfromthefirehose.com/images/sav1.jpg

One "tip" I feel that worth mention is that the "flat" coating that Savage puts on their tactical rifles sometimes leaves residue in the scope base screw holes. This creates a problem when you go to mount your scope base - so you may need to chase the threads on the screw holes.

I had this problem and have talked to a few others that did as well - so don't panic when the screws don't go in..

The Medalist does not need to be bedded. Most will free float the rear tang but I am not sure it is really needed.

so, as long as the barrel floats, the receiver does NOT need to be rebedded?
