Ive looked around and cant seem to find a breakdown of the parts I need. When I search 308 upper parts list I get everything else in results than what im looking for.

Does anyone have a schematic or parts list so I have a clue of what I need to build an upper? This is my first time doing a build so pls have mercy on me if I dont understand tech jargon

Upper receiver, BCG, Charging Handle, Gas Tube, Gas Block, Barrel, Barrel nut, and depending on your handguard or rail of choice, a delta ring. Same list of parts you would use to make an AR15 upper just .308 specific.

I found this pic to help, you mentioned barrel nut which is #7 what is #5, 6, 8? the delta is #11 right?

I suggest getting a free floating handguard so you don't have to deal with 5, 6, 8, 10, & 11.

Is it an actual AR10 or DPMS style build you're doing? They're different parts for the different platforms.

Note that some of the free floating handguards come with barren nuts, so you really have to use them. Sampson is the one I used. I found it very hard to find all of the stuff in stock. Barrel was really hard but I was looking for a longer one. I also found it hard to find a BCG.

You need to figure out if you want a sight gas block or a low profile gas block and you need to get a hand guard that will fit that configuration.

Most everything is DPMS but do be careful to note whether it is DPMS compatible or Armilite because as said above some things don't fit.

also you will need to know whos upper your using as well you still have high and low profile uppers. if your going to buy a free floated rail you dont want there to be a big step in there

i have DPMS upper LR-308 A3 Flat-Top.. I have 16" barrel HBAR I will prob go with free float handguard(HG) made for this upper (http://www.midwayusa.com/product/434332/dpms-free-float-tube-handguard-low-quad-rail-lr-308-carbine-length-aluminum-matte?cm_vc=S014) rail to avoid the extra parts...

My set up is for a carbine
Question... the gas tube system I get will be for carbine BUT how do I know if the HG will cover the gas block(GB) or not?

Most HG's dont spell out length only that they are carbine is there a way to know whether or not one I pick will cover the GB?

That handguard will go up to the gas block on a carbine length gas system. It will not cover the gas block.

It'll look like this:

Ok so how do I know what to look for to find one that will cover it? or b/c of that low profile upper how do i find a GB with a rail that be even with the rail of the HG and upper?

First off, is it the lower or higher height DPMS upper?

its low profile

There aren't any railed gas blocks that will be even with that height upper, at least none that I've ever seen.

You'll have to go the longer rail and low profile gas block route if you want a continuous top rail. You'll need a handguard that's at least 11" long to completely cover the low profile gas block.

I have found a number of low profile picatinny gas blocks but you dont think any will fit?

So Im better off with a gas block flip up front sight combo then?

You asked if any gas blocks were the same height as the upper, which the answer is no.

If you want a handguard that'll cover the gas block, it needs to be min. 11" long. The majority of the hand guards you'll find will be 12"-13" long. To go this route, the gas block must be a low profile one (no rails on it) so it'll fit inside the handguard.

If you just want a railed gas block to mount a sight on, then there are quite a few out there. They just won't be the same height as the upper like you said you wanted.

A flip-up sight/gas block combo will work also.

ETA: The JD gas block (http://www.riflegear.com/p-771-jd-machine-upper-height-gas-block-308.aspx) is made to line up with the higher height uppers. If you don't mind the gas block sitting about 1/16" higher, then use it.
