I'm actually going to redo it soon in extreme digital pattern with woodland colors in Duracoat. This was a Krylon job.

Thank you! It's just Testors enamel model paint - Armor Sand and Olive Drab - from a Paasche double action airbrush. It has held up pretty well, showing a little wear around the edges since I painted it a year ago.

yes, but I was his beta test guinea pig. He jacked the rifle up, and I had to clean it up and make it work again. He is a terrible gunsmith imho. Never again!!

Took me awhile to bite the bullet and do it as well man... Just throw your rifle on the ground and run a big *** stripe of paint across, once the first pass is over it's nothing
Hell man they are just tools... They are going to get banged around and scratched up anyway... Might as well hit em with the rattle can haha

yea, im scouring gunbroker for a mini 14 stock so i can test it out.
what is better to paint, wood or composite?
the wood on my mini14 is too classy and smooth i couldnt bear myself to paint over it. im thinkin about grabbing one of those black stocks.

Never tried to paint wood before but I wouldn't imagine it being much different... One thing you could try different patterns on is BB gun if you have one handy

honestly, 1lostinspace, and fuse, are masters. back in '79, i read an issue of SOF, that mentioned that mercenaries, who had captured "terrs", in rhodesia, (now zimbabwa), said that the (terr's), had recognized the "black" of the rifles, and were therefore able to avoid, or survive an ambush. you guys have gone a long way.

Sounds to me like he is equating you guys with the Mercs - camouflaging their gear so they can more easily kill (capture?) the Terr's. ;)
Nice camo jobs, any way you look at it, though!

I've got a question for you guys who paint your AR's with rails. Do you leave the rails on when you paint? Or do you take them off at paint seperately? Do you paint the barrel and gas tube under the rail as well? This thread makes me want to paint mine..

This camo is a poor copycat of a current for sale .300WSM by another. I could not get myself to paint the metal or trade out the sling etc. Maybe later. Anyhow it is done with the 3 Krylon Camo colors and took less than 2 hours..mostly waiting.

I don't recommend painting the barrel or the gas tube. I've seen paint burned black, but that was after 210 rounds in under one minute. I'd slide a piece of paper underneath the rail to cover the barrel and gas tube before you paint it.

Here she is... Not quite done, still need a BCG and BUIS, plus I need to add a clearcoat next weekend (just shot the barrel today after I got the upper assembly back from Riflegear).
Aluma-Hyde Coyote base, Desert Sand primary top color, with Rustoleum dark brown and smidgen of forest green.

Hey guy's heres a tip for those using krylon and or home depot rattle cans when your project is dry thoroughly, put a couple coats of clear lacquer over it in light coats and it will last far longer, you can get it in flat, satin, semi,or gloss. made by Valspar available at paint stores. ALWAY'S test it first!!!!!!

I've had a lot of issues with compatibility with rattle can clearcoats, including a 2nd coat of clear causing serious wrinkling, and going into "never-dry mode" where the finish is still slightly tacky months later.
AlumaHyde-II clear is compatible over Krylon/RustOleum, and is more durable than hardware store clears.

All true thats why I use lacquer it dries almost instantly! so no wrinkles but yes compatability always a concern so test first....:)

Make sure you post pictures when you finish! Or even write up a how-to. I still can't seem to get up the guts to spray my AR.. Maybe one of these days.
Your multicam looks good on those airsoft guns! I noticed the outlines around the colors are somewhat fuzzy.. Any reason for that or is it just how it came out?

The outlines are fuzzy because I dusted the final project with a little tan (if I remember correctly.) I didn't like the abrupt edges of it and thought it made the whole job blend better. I am getting closer to having time to paint my 700. I haven't done it yet because I keep changing things on it and want to have it perfect when I paint it.
I will try to do a write up and maybe a couple videos on it. I think this type of painting will catch on really quickly when or if the Army permanently switches to multicam.

When I painted mine, I held the masks an inch or two away from the parts to lightly feather the edges.

Good call. The trick to multicam is to have a little bit of both. If you look at the multicam pattern, some lines are crisp while others are more faded. I think I am going to continue to work on this technique before I paint my Rem700.

The ACU one is actually harder to find sometimes at least where I live.
So we see the nice job you did, how does it do against a darker background with redwood, pine, and sequoia trees?? I'm interested in a do-all camo that I can do myself. Thanks for the inspiration man!

well here is the thing when you are in the woods there are shadows everywhere so it appears darker. It works like ACU does it gets draker in shadows and appears like a woodland camo.
take a look at this picture it's ACU and German woodland Flectarn

She had been wanting a "pink camo" paint job since she got her first BB gun.
She loves this one, and loves showing it off to the girls at the range.
That was my daughters old rifle when she was 7, now she's 10 and has a 10/22. The single shot was passed down to her 5 yr old sister. Here's a pic of the new attempt at a pink camo job. She still loves showing it off to the other female shooters :)
It's kind of inspired by the Socom 16 urban camo job that Springfield does.

Man there are some great looking paint jobs in this thread... Really making me want to paint my AK.
This is not mine, but so far it is my favorite paint job I have come across. Thinking about trying to recreate it on my AK74.

Just wish I could remember where I saved it from...

I am very jealous of all you who were able to do such amazing work on your firearms with your own hands! I wimped out and had someone hydrograph my AR for me :( It did turn out very nice, but I do not have the luxury of saying I did it myself like so many of you.
Not the most recent picture, but it gives a general idea. I recently upgraded the YHM flip-up front sight/gas block, YHM QDS flip up rear sight and a YHM 5M1 comp/break. I will try to update the pics soon.

The camo job was done by Shark Bite Custom and was done with a water transfer process in Desert Digital.

Crappy picture, but I used duracoat coyote brown as a base, then stone and desert beige with broom bristle stencil.
I didn't wanna use the black foam tube for the ACE stock, so I did a paracord wrap.
