View Full Version : Some desert fun with the Ruger Gunsite Rifle (pic heavy)

I have had my GSR for about 2 1/2 years and still love it. I take it on most of my desert ramblings as it is just about perfect. I always seem to read about folks that are not sure about accuracy, reliability, or performance, so I thought it was time for a little testing to update my older post.

Here is what I did:

I had two old closet doors, so I painted a target on each side totaling four. I fired five rounds as quick as possible from slinged, supported, prone. I fired from 100, 200, 300, and 400 yards or at least pretty close. I had to pace off the distance, so it could be +, - ten yards or so. I began firing from 100 yards, then immediately reloaded and moved back in 100 yard increments until I reached 400 yards.

So here are the results:

From 100 yards:

100 yard target: about two inch group

200 yard target: about 3.5 inch group

300 yard target: about nine inch group

400 yard target: about 19 inch group

I am running a traditional Leupold Scout Scope scope, so 400 yards was easy to hit, but harder to pick an exact hold over. My first round went low, and then I kind of got it figured out. The most interesting component of the 400 yard group is the horizontal dispersion; it is less than three inches. If I had figured out the hold over on the first shot, I would have had a group similar in size to the 300 yard group. That is something to work on.

Anyways it is a great rifle that shoots very well. Any creature with evil intent that comes within 400 yards or so must tread with heavy trepidations or at least carry a strong belief in the hereafter.

I hope this provides some useful information for folks looking to buy a Ruger Gunsite Rifle.

And now for some gratuitous GSR pics:

Thanks for the look,

I ran my far this weekend too, at 150 paces I hit the bowling pins regularly with the wolf .308. I was freaking hot too!

Sounds like a great day.
I've only been able to stretch my scout out to 200 so far. Need
to get out where there is more room.
What is your scope zeroed to?

I have my scope zeroed at 200 yards. It shot well at 300 and 400 with very little hold over.

Thanks for the info. I've had the GSR on my shopping list for about 2 years but couldn't male the decision because of the various questions regarding accuracy and such. I think its just jumped to the top of my Xmas list.

How many rounds total did you fire during the trip? What mags did you use?

Very nice...can't wait to take mine out...

I fired about 60 rounds or so. It is very easy on the shoulder. I just AI metal mags. I sort of kitted mine out before the polymer mags came out. I tried some C-Products and they were total junk.

Think we need more pics of the GSR.

Thatís a pretty sweet setup you have there ECV and it puts out some nice groupings.

One thing thatís somewhat disturbing to me though, while youíre out in the desert shooting please pay attention to the direction youíre shooting and make sure you have a backstop for your bullets. In the first picture I see a small hill to the right behind youíre targets and thatís the ideal place for a backstop.

Not trying to sound like a jerk or anything but there are more people running around the desert than most people think and thereís nothing more disturbing than having bullets wiz buy your head while hiking around out in the desert.

No need to be disturbed. I have been shooting out in the desert for quite a while. This spot is actually a nice little bowl that catches all rounds quite nicely. It is hard to tell from the pictures, but it is very safe.

If I had to have one rifle to bug out with that would probably be it.

I actually got to shoot one yesterday at the range. Shot two shots at the 300 yard steel plate(Laguna Seca) and hit it on my second shot, iron sights.

Pretty damn nice rifle if I do say so myself. He said he got it pre-panic for about 800$, I am jealous.

You can use the scope like that? What is the eye relief about 10 inches?

looks like fun.....

Ruger now has all stainless models out with an 18" barrel as well. Also has the flash hider. This must have come out recently as I've been looking every six months for them.

Awesome real-world shooting you got there; I'd echo the thought that the GSR makes for an excellent all-purpose rifle.

I'm still begging for one in mid-power rounds (7.62x39 mostly, but .223, 6.8, .300BLK would be cool).
