9mm = cheaper shooting and availability even in the SHTF scenario. Good knockdown with the newer loads.

.40 = better ballistics and a wider range of bullet weights. Higher expense and non-NATO loading that is more difficult to find in a disaster.

They're both good choices..... the last couple of pistols I picked up have been 9mm simply because ammo prices are out of control and the 9 is cheaper to shoot. I also wanted to have more stuff in NATO calibers in case of SHTF. This said, I prefer the .40 for knockdown power. I also have a couple of 10mm's that I'm going to get some .40 conversion barrels for so I've been hesitant to pick up any new 40's....

9mm! Numerous excellent rounds in this caliber. :)

Either mag will hold the same amount...10 rds.;)

The price of ammo! :mad:

Shoot both rounds and see which one you like better. Personally, .40SW is my least favorite due to its recoil; 9mm Luger, .357 Sig and .45 ACP don't bother me.
Some of my friends have no problems with .40, but do not like the .357 Sig.

The rotating barrel on the px4 supposedely tames the .40 to the level of a 9mm, which was the reason for my interest earlier this year. However, this information is not from personal experience and pricing was not good at the time. If I were to purchase a px4, I would get it in .40 only because the platform was supposedly built around this cartridge. You will be happy with either choice.

9mm

cheaper giving you more practice.

Again 40sw does not have more "knockdown power" than 9mm. It is so marginally different that if you are relying on the single digit precent difference between the two as your upper hand, you're most likely toast anyways.

There is a very notable difference in "knockdown" between 9mm and .40 S&W and the .40 handles 50+ gr heavier bullets.

Hot +P 9mm gets into the 1125 fps range with 420 or so ME on a 147 gr slug; the .40 will do 1300+ and close to 600 with a 155.... better SD and meplat .40 too. It's difficult to beat the versatility of the .40 (unless you jump up to the 10mm), but it is more expensive to shoot.

If you are going to carry it in the sticks I would consider the .40 for the larger, heavier & better penetrating bullets that will create a larger wound channel.

If you're using it for mainly range and PP there are a lot of ammo types out there that will be more than adequate with 9mm..... more range time since ammo is less as well.

It really depends on your personal preference and intended purpose.

Another thread talked about the sig .40 being convertible to 9mm via barrel change (or even CZ52 7.62x25 to 9mm). Does such a thing exist for the px-4?

[.40 s&w -> 9mm ok, no can do 9mm to .40s&w right?]

You may think that, but ballistics don't agree. Differences are marginal at very best.
