All I have on hand for 223 at the moment trying to gauge if it's worth messing with or just wait until Varget is available again.

WW748 was the original powder of choice for the SMK69 and the Hornady 68gr match bullet back when heavy bullets first became available. I started shooting NRA High Power using the SMK69 over WW748 in 1986. The tried and true load recipe from then was 25.0gr with OAL at 2.245 to 2.250".

This was load data taken right from an American Rifleman article published in 1986 about making the AR-15 competitive in NRA High Power Rifle competition.

As usual, it is suggested that you start with a reduced charge weight and work it up carefully in your rifle till you get to 25.0 or see pressure signs. 24.0 would be a good start point.

BTW, that was a very accurate load back then and will still be so today. Varget will not necessarily provide better accuracy, but it certainly will cost more than 748 ;)
