I plan to pick up a tri rail for a forward grip for my AZEX ak-47, but cant decide on which rail setup to pickup for it. I am going to pick up the ultimak optic mount for sure though to use with an aimpoint, but i really am hoping to avoid the additional $220 for the ultimak lower rails just to mount the one grip

Came across the 338 Alum AK Tri-Rail http://www.blackjackbuffers.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=75&products_id=493&zenid=42e5b9856d4d74c1ce711f5fc170acce made by Gun-Tech USA, and was wondering if anyone has any experience with it or what everyones opinions are about it. really liking the $75 price tag over 220 for the ultimak

feedback will be appreciated

thanks
brian

My only question is... what are you going to use it for? You want to mount a grip, like a forward grip? Cheap solution would be to get a Romy handguard.

If you want to mount optics, I wouldn't get the gas-tube rail (you mention it for an Aimpoint), I'm not convinced it'll hold zero.. Go for the Picatinny rail that goes on a standard AK side-mount rail, or better yet, forget the Aimpoint and get something from these guys: http://kalinkaoptics.com/ .

+1 If you want a vertical foregrip I'd go with a Romanian handguard. They are cheap and look much more natural on an AK. But that is because I hate all this non-wooden furniture and rails on AKs.

really just for a forward grip, but i may mount something else on it down the line. i really dont care for the look of the grips i have seen for the romy ones, and have only seen them in wood while my stock is synthetic black

for the sight, i am going to pick up the ultimak mount which has the rail where the foregip is, but the rail is lower than the iron sights so that an aimpoint with the low mount will line up with the iron sights and from reviews i have read say it holds a zero

I like mine in black.

I'm not a huge fan of tons of unused/unusable rails, though. :p

I'm not totally convinced on the Ultimak: my gas tube can wiggle a bit. Plus, I just like the Russian solution better. To each his own.

That and I'll take the cheapo Russkie optics over glass that costs twice what my AK costs.

There's also this little sucker: http://www.botachtactical.com/stunmo.html Drill two holes in your current handguard, and you should be in business. I'm thinking about picking one up for a light, but there are other options that I want to look at first.

haha, yeah, the price of the aimpoint really sucks. still deciding though if im gonna break down and buy a real one and use it for multiple guns, or just go with a clone aimpoint or one of the tasco propoint aimpoint clone ones

that solution for the foregrip could work, because i really dont like the look of unused rails either. will keep this in mind for sure, but am gonna look around some more

really appreciate your feedback man

I've had good luck with Ultimak on the Mini 14, and they tend to be rock solid, but any gas tube mount will get hot. Not a problem for range shooting, but for mag dumps, they can get pretty durn hot. I haven't heard of anyone melting down an optic, though.
