Any other quick and effective methods aside from using heat?

Quick and effective? None, that I know of. Heat is the key to removing cosmoline. That is part of its design. It has a very low melting point (113-125 degrees F).

If its sunny outside leave it out and let it melt out.
Worked awesome on a M44 Nagant I had.
Or maybe a hair dryer would be a lot quicker.

I wrapped mine in papertowels, then black plastic bags, and left it on the dash in my car on a warmish day. would have probably worked a little better on a hotter day, but worked pretty well.

This is a particularly effective technique, but only on hot days. Effective it can be, quick - not so much. But I recommend it. I have used it a couple of times.

Alcohol is a very friendly solvent. The last Mosin I bought I went to the dollar store and spent 8 bucks on alcohol, paper towels and stiff brush set. On the metal parts, I took the bolt apart, soaked it all alcohol while I was cleaning the wood.

if you can fit it in use a dishwasher with no detergent. It works on my sks stocks not sure nagants will fit in a normal dishwasher

You could fit 100 Nagants in a dishwasher.

But why would you put any gun in a dishwasher?

steam works very well also. Buy a hand steamer in the laundry section at wally world for $20. you won't burn yourself and it doesn't smell funky

Yeah, in the olden days, we used to leave the stock out on the roof of my covered patio in the sun on hot days---paper towels and a bit of alcohol would clean them nicely after the heat got to them.

This subject comes up almost every other day on this forum.

The large box that J&G ships in makes a great cosmoline easy bake oven. Take the box, stick a clip-light in it with a 100w light bulb, wrap up your stock in paper towells and cook away. If you want to get fancy you can line the box with foil.

I just put the stock on the top rack of the oven and some tin foil to catch the dripping cosmoline on the rack under it, and put the oven on low heat. Works perfectly. For the metal parts, buy a small can of mineral spirits and let them soak.

If you have the equipment to pull a vacuum on it, while heating it up, it will get ALL the cosmo out of it.
