Gloves while shooting?

Who wears gloves while shooting? If you do, what kind? Why? Do you know of any that provide good hand protection while preserving awesome dexterity?

Sorry if someone finds this lame or if it has been done before. I haven't seen it recently and I'm kinda bored. :P

I picked up a pair of under armor gloves from the outlet for like $15. They have the silicone honeycomb pattern on them helping with grip. I like em.

I would only use them for hard kicking revolvers unless you have girly hands and want to keep them smooth and not chip a nail.

Didn't California just pass Measure B in the last election, requiring people wear a glove when they shoot?

Ribbed seem to work rather well, helping to give extra grip on the slide.

I wear them if I'm going to be shooting for extended periods of time or if it's super cold, if not I just grip onto the bare rail.

Mechanix cut off the trigger finger on the gloves. Easiest and cheap.

For some reason, I've never liked shooting with gloves on. I seem to lose the feel for the gun. When working patrol, I avoided wearing gloves unless it was extremely cold, and then I only wore thin leather ones.

Some guys like it, but not me.

Home Depot Pro grips, thin and tight up against hand, thus excellent dexterity. If i'm bench shooting no gloves. Doing run, gun and drills (crawling, climbing, prone etc. is very hard on the hands) Another reason why, quick manipulation of an AK can quickly wear out my hands.

Wearing a glove is up to you. depending on what you plan to do.

My model 357(alloy 41 Mag.) tears up regular shooting gloves pretty quickly.

If something is gonna get shredded I'd rather it be something that I can take off.

Awesome dexterity goes away after about a dozen rounds of 500 or 460.

I tried on some nice motorcycle gloves other day.

Then I saw they were $100. But they fit REAL good. Now I'm ruined for any other gloves.

Makes me think about Tony Montya in Scareface and "Russian shoes that hurt your feet". I heard they actually had shoes that weren't R or L, just "shoes".


But if I was heading for a gunfight I guess $100 would be worth it. Some fancy insulation for winter riding mostly on non-palm top, but perfect feel on fingers that actually curved with your fingers.

What does our military use?

PS-I'm guessing this is mostly about cold weather, not girly hands. But IMO a lot of gun controls and general design don't seem very ergometric, and down right user unfriendly compared to any other product, and I'm a former construction worker and I've done nasty tight knuckle busting mechanical auto repair.

Voodoo Tactical. They're cheap and fine for range work. Keeps the hot brass of ya', and offers some protections from any other bumps and scrapes you might encounter.

I wouldn't mess with them if I heard a bump in the night. They're more like "seatbelts" while at the range. Why wouldn't you wear a little more protection if you had the opportunity?

Couldn't agree more. Cheaper than overpriced "tactical gloves"...

I have several pairs. I've been wearing them for years. I especially like them when shooting my AK because the hand guards get really hot.

They're tough, last forever and can do just about with them, not just shoot. I love multipurpose. For about $20 or less, even if they do get damaged somehow, they're easy to replace.

Plus... If you watch movies like Act of Valor (Navy Seals) and documentaries on the various Special Forces, they are often wearing Mexchanix gloves. If it's good enough for them, it's good enough for me.

Depends on what you are doing. Sitting at a bench on the range...climbing over rocks and walking around scrub lands.

Anyone who goes out into Mother Nature, knowing they are going to interact with said nature, then doesn't protect their hands is asking for an injury...on that same note if you are smart enough to wear gloves...have you trained with those gloves on & do you know how to manipulate your firearm with those gloves on?

I know a guy who used them for shooting action pistol. He says they are thin, provide good dexterity and are fairly cheap. He's a good shooter so it must work.

IMO, Seems like a tradeoff between protection & "feel" I prefer lighter Gloves they feel better & make Operations easier. Haven`t "chunked" a Knuckle yet with light Gloves, but I will!

Costco usually has Underarmour or Mechanics type Gloves, they`re reasonable & they work!

I am actually somewhat of a glove junkie. I try to wear them as much as possible at work (automotive) and while shooting. I am still searching for the perfect glove, at least where shooting is concerned. All of you who mentioned mechanix originals... Have you noticed that when they changed the wrist strap they started making the thumbs slightly too long? This pretty much wrecks the dexterity I am searching for as it puts too much fabric at the tip of my thumb. The rest of the glove still fits top notch.

I have also tried voodoo tactical and home depot's "firm grip" leather variants. These fit fine and the dexterity is alright, but they aren't wearing nearly as well as the mechanix gloves do for me and are falling apart way too quickly. $20-$30 should take me farther than a few outings. So that's why I'm asking around. The search continues.

i wear a beretta shooting glove on my left hand since i shoot left handed and multiple pistols. I find it unifies the feeling of different guns and grips I have when I change between xd, sig, cz, and taurus and sw as the checkering doesn't matter and I always have almost the same grip on every gun now since my fingers only feel the inside of my glove. got them free when I ordered a new locking block kit and springs for my pt92 from beretta.

I use Mechanix when running my carbines because they tend to heat up a bit more. I cut off the thumbs and the tip of the trigger finger so I can reload easier

I've only used a glove when operating a lever action. I guess I'm a sissy because the action makes my hand hurt.

I found a pair of PAST shooting gloves with the padding for the thumb part of your palm. I use them when I am shooting my Super Redhawk .480 Ruger for practice. It makes it a little more tolerable. With them I can shoot quite a bit and not hurt. Without, 4-5 rounds are the max.
