I am looking for a good all around M4 style upper to use with an Addax billet lower and an ACOG (.223). Looking for something under $600 delivered.

What's the top of the line for that price?

BCM. If you decide to go with rifle length, WOA: http://www.whiteoakarmament.com/xcart/product.php?productid=17841&cat=259&page=1

Come to think of it, WOA can build you a carbine upper, as well.

Thanks for the responses. The PSA looks like a good deal without the BCG.

DSA Arms is decent for the price too, I have one of their barrel assemblies on a blemished BCM upper receiver and everything came together nicely.

I am looking for a good all around M4 AR-15 with a 16" barrel style upper to use with an Addax billet lower and an ACOG (.223). Looking for something under $600 delivered.

What's the top of the line for that price?

From wikipedia:
M4: It is a gas-operated, air-cooled, magazine-fed, selective fire,shoulder-fired weapon with a telescoping stock. A shortened variant of the M16A2 rifle, the M4 has a 14.5 in (370 mm) barrel, allowing its user to better operate in close quarters combat.
Manufacturer: Colt Defense, U.S. Ordnance, Remington Arms Company

3 things that really get me spun up:
Prius drivers in the left lane going 66mph
Fabric softener on my dish towels
People calling a 16" barrelled AR an "M4."

OP is simply talking about uppers, he used the term "M4 style" to designate an upper with a carbine gas system, M4 feed ramps and a 16" barrel.

Had he said "M16" upper, we would be suggesting uppers with a 20" barrel and a rifle length gas system.

Had he simply said "AR-15 upper", he would have gotten a lot of questions like:

What barrel length?
What kind of gas system?
What kind of upper? A2 or A3?

Or a bunch of smart @ss remarks about how he needs to give some specifications.

As said god knows how many times. Palmetto palmetto palmetto. You can't beat their FN hammer forged uppers with great barrels. If you can get a stainless barrel, its a 1:8 twist and those are great all around uppers, but their FN 1:7 twist barrels are nice but you've gotta shoot heavier stuff. I have a mid-length upper on a palmetto lower right now, mutt of a LPK, JTROCKS mag lock (soon to be a solar tactical style grip) ACE ARFX stock, and waiting for my scope mount for an Optisan 1-4 and I really like that setup. BCG is really smooth racking and dropping the bolt, no bolt bounce and fairly soft shooting even with the thread protector versus the birdcage that came on it. Its funny because it looks short to me after putting it all together with no flash hider.

Why M4?

I like a 16" barrel so that the muzzle device does not need to be pinned and welded.

I like a mid-length gas system because they run smoother than carbine gas (which an M4 upper would have).

It's personal preference but a traditional M4 style upper is not something I would want.

Just curious if all things were equal on the lower for the recoil. Trying to wrap my head around how it could be different if the uppers were the same length, gas systems the same, FH the same, etc. I've shot a lot of these things and never noticed and have owned BCM, PSA, RRA, Bushmaster, JP, Saber, and a handful of others and the recoil was the same regardless. Only thing that made a difference was gas tube length on a rifle vs carbine lower.

Why anyone wants a heavy *** M4 profile 16" carbine barrel in todays market is beyond me. If I wanted a carbine gas system it would have an 11.5" or shorter barrel. Why do you want a heavy barreled carbine with a cut out for a M203 grenade launcher when you could get a softer shooting 16" middy?

Think about it before you buy.

I highly recommend Rainier Arms because they have great products and great Military discount. I also don't like drinking the BCM kool aid. This upper comes with a quality BCG with O-ring on ejector spring, MOE handguard, and their Extreme Tactical compensator. They also charge 7 dollar flat rate shipping. I bought the CE16 and I am very pleased. The PSA and BSM uppers are good, but then you have to buy charging handle and BCG and the don't come with MOE handguard usually.

Here is the Mid length version for 10 dollars more if you change your mind to go with a smoother shooting platform

LMT, BCM, PSA, Rainier Arms or DD would probably fit that budget minus handguards or a rail system.

Hammer forged may not really be necessary but if its cheaper why the hell not! Or you can pay extra to have your rifle say BCM on the side.

Question... do those handguards come standard with the PSA upper? Or are they removable?

They are standard and removable or you have the option of getting MOE handguards for +$20. There are also some freefloat options depending on which upper you choose.

Is that grip comfortable for you? My friend uses it for his bench gun but I would find it uncomfortable for something requiring shooting for awhile.

RP1911
09-08-2012, 9:12 PM
Yes it is comfortable. I have large hands and this grip is perfect for me. I have this grip on two of my ARs and have one more grip that I will be using for another build.

I don't remember what the brand is. There are no markings. It goes back to mid-nineties.

Looks like this one:
