I now have a fair supply of TM 80% lowers. I'm selling these 80% lowers for $150.00 each WITH all engraving included. Shipping is $10.00 extra for any number of lowers. California residents will need to add 7.5% sales tax (11.25).

Check out the photo gallery on my website for some recent engravings (Near the bottom). http://vadertactical.com/engraving-gallery/

I'm also happy to engrave your 80% lowers, BUT Please let me know what you have before sending it.

I need to address anodized lowers. Anodized lowers tend to chip out when engraving them. It’s not too bad mostly just a fuzzy edge but when lines run close together those fuzzy edges can overlap.

Consider this a disclaimer. I will engrave anodized 80% lowers, but I can’t be responsible for small chips and fizzy edges.

For engraving on your 80% lower (with NO work done) the price starts at $40.00 for engraving on one side of the magwell along with the selector engraving of your choice on one side. Extra engravings are $10.00 for the other side of the magwell, and $5.00 each for text on either side and/or the selector on the second side.
Shipping is $10.00 extra for any number of lowers, tax in included.

I have found that engraving with just about any bit leaves the edges of the engraving a little rough. A light sanding with fine sandpaper or a light bead blasting cleans this right up.

Check out my website;

http://www.VaderSpade.com

Below are some pictures I’ll be adding more as we go along.

Because sports logos are trademarked I can’t engrave them for profit. You can however put them on your own guns for your own use.

i know this was a quickie, but some suggestions:
use a stronger looking font
instead of thin lines for the shading effect on Yee's face, consider milling entire areas (shaded or unshaded) to depth to see how that looks.
thicken the circle-slash

I hear what you're saying and it was just a quickie, and it's 3X4 inches. By the time I shrink it down to fit in the 1.4 inch area on the left side of a lower those lines will be getting in each others way.

I'm not a real expert on file types, so far I've only had a couple that would not work and my son was able to convert those, the higher the resolution the better.
Iím working with Vectricís VCarve pro 6.5, they may have something to say about what works best. I should know these things, and now that Iím getting good with the program I would probably pick up a lot of little details that were over my head when I started.

As long as no work has been done on your 80% lowers I can engrave them. Let me know what you want in a PM and we can work out the details. I would be happy to trade for a steel target or two. :)

So the flag was more of a challenge than I thought it would be. I couldn’t get clean vectors around the stars from any clip art, so I drew a flag from scratch. I think it turned out pretty good. It will engrave cleaner on aluminum.

Just a idea, not trying to be a pain but thinking about stuff. How about every other stripe of the flag you run the mill over. So a blank line then a solid line, a blank line then a solid, and on and on. Ill take one plus the info needed like SN name ect.

I'll give that a try and post the results, but it may be a day or two. "EDIT" I was just working out the details on doing this and have figured out that it would require a tool change. Still doable but not something I'm going to tackle for a while. Those stars are SO SMALL that anything but a diamond tip just makes them look like blobs. Milling out a solid line would take a very small end mill. Very small end mills have notoriously shorts lives and they are not cheap. I would need to do the stars and the changes tools and do the strips, and that would require new G-code. Maybe at some point but I'm just too busy to figure it all out right now.

I have been very busy (that's a good thing) most orders are on their way. I have a few challenging pieces I'm working on, and I'm waiting on Real Small end mills for a couple of others.

I have made progress on the flag, the new bits I have on order will help. Here's where we are;
http://i753.photobucket.com/albums/xx174/VaderSpade/Dscn0271.jpg
I'm trying to figure out how to get the program NOT to outline the white stripes. The outline makes the red stripes look bigger but without the outline the program will just fill the entire flag.
I will probably end up redrawing the entire flag and making the white strips bigger so the outlines blend. Lot's of work and probably a few do overs. Stay tuned.

Right now I'm working on a dragon and a fish. If I've missed anyone please send me a PM.
Quick, yours are shipping today.

You said these have to be shipped to an FFL? They aren't OLL?

As they are they do not need to be sent through an FFL, my only reference to sending them to an FFL was for anodizing AFTER they have been finished.

They need to be sent to a dealer after they have been anodized? After anodized it is a AW? Sorry I tried looking up info on it and couldn't seem to find anything.

GunToter925
07-27-2012, 9:15 AM
But if you did send it to an FFL does it need to be DROS?

VaderSpade
07-27-2012, 9:21 AM
If you do ALL the work yourself (including anodizing or painting) the lowers never need to go through an FFL.

If you mill/drill it and then send it out to have any other work (such as anodizing) done, that work will need to be done by someone with an FFL.

I don't think it has to be DROS just to have work done on it.

GunToter925
07-27-2012, 9:33 AM
Can a person go somewhere and anodize something without training? If I did send it into a FFL would they have to register it after they work it?With all this **** with the ATT I fear my weapons would be taken from me. Both my current guns are registered so the government knows I have them. I don't want them to know about this for fear of completely losing the option to defend myself and my family. I really want to build it completely by my hand.

Any time, I just finished Buds. Write down what you want on it and where you want it and I'll get it done.
Bud wants his anodized red, and I have one that I want to try some splash anodizing on, maybe we can get them all done together. When I anodize I like to do 5 or 6 at the same time.
If you bring it with you to the shop I can pick it up some time next week.

In one of your pictures of your builds you had done a green anodized lower, will you be doing custom colors like green at some point?

I would like to offer color anodizing but there are some problems. Black anodizing covers most problems but colored anodizing doesnít always cover everything.
One problem is graining in some forgings; Iím not sure if itís a temperature thing during forging or what causes it, but some forging show graining after anodizing. The graining shows up in dark lines that can look bad when anodized in colors. I havenít seen this problem in billets.
Another problem is spots I donít know what causes them but I have had problems with spotting.
And the last problem I have is consistency. I havenít done enough color anodizing to get any one color to turn out the same every time. I plan to try some two color splash anodizing next week, letís see how that goes.

Would bead blasted them after they are engraved ruin the engraving?

Bead blasting would round the corners of the engravings, and mute the details.
I have found that the chemical etch before anodizing gives you nearly the same surface as bead blasting but does not seem to hurt the details as all surfaces are etch equally.

I can through it into my vibratory tumbler and get the rough burs off, then it would just need a good cleaning before duracoating.

You can purchase the chemical etcher from duracoat to prep the piece as Vader has said.

Also, I have done both bead blasting and chemical etching prior to duracoating. As long as u prep it correctly both are good to go.

I have not tried that YET. I'm sure they are spinning that on a 4th axis. My mill has that capability but I have not gone there yet.
I also have a spring loaded bit that claims to be able to engrave over uneven surfaces. It does work I'm just not sure how far I can push it.

We'll be preping today, and feeding over 8,000 people tomorrow. I'll try to answer my PM's and e-mails when I find a second but don't expect too much this weekend. Thanks

Growing up the family business was raising honeybees. I built this one as a tribute my father who has been gone about 5 years now.

That's his signature scanned from my second grade report card, and the family business logo. 37-63 was the brand assigned by the county and burnt into everyone of our beehives.

Still a work in progress, but here's a few new selector markings. These are done but I plan to make a slightly smaller set, these looked fine but looked a little bigger than I expected on a lower.

I apologize if this was answered somewhere else... I browsed this thread twice and I still don't understand what makes these 80% lowers, therefore requiring no FFL for transfer...

What part is the 20% that remains to be done by the owner?

VaderSpade
10-24-2012, 4:01 PM
The fire control pocket needs to be milled out, the trigger, hammer, selector, holes and trigger slot needs to be milled or drilled. Then you need to anodize or paint it.
It's not the cheapest way to go, but you will be able to say I built it myself, and have your own custom engravings on it. It's also a good path to building an AR pistol.

Samples of these lowers have been sent to the proper authorities and in return the manufactures were sent determination letters stating that in the eyes of the law these were NOT considered guns.

to expand on what Vader said, "80%" is purely a colloquialism, a term of art that refers to a type of product but has no quantitative meaning whatsoever.
whether or not a chunk of metal is legally considered a firearm is purely due to BATFE's whims... there is no critical percentage threshold and the use of such metrics is inappropriate.
currently, BATFE bases their definition on whether certain key elements have been finished (or even started). tomorrow, they may decide to use another set of criteria.

Thank you. The reason I am asking is that many lowers I see in the pictures above seem 100% to me. I know that some sell "80% lowers" where the magazine well needs to be drilled, for instance. Which is why I wanted to be clear on what work needed to be still done on these. A friend of mine has access to the necessary equipment and I should be able to finish one or a few of these.

I see an order for one or two of these in my near future (that future being when my latest invoices get paid).

Is there an extra if you want SEMI - SAFE - BURST on the right side instead of SEMI - SAFE - AUTO?

I'm working on a M16A4-style AR, and that would be a nice plus...

VaderSpade
10-24-2012, 5:53 PM
No extra for any selector markings, as long as I can make it fit.
SAFE/SEMI/BURST is one I should have anyway.

$105.00 for an 80% AR-15 lower with a custom engraving in area #1 or Area #4 and custom selector engraving on one side. Extra engravings are $5.00-$10.00 each area. Shipping is $10.00 for any number of lowers. Sales tax is included, but I'll need to bump up my prices at some point. What I didn't count on is spending 3-4 hours a day on e-mails. I'm hoping a web page with a FAQ's page will cut back on the e-mails.

Colors are just too hit and miss. I only do colors for myself.

Colors also show ALL graining and any other flaws that may be in a forging.

That being said I have a couple of hot pink hello kitty 80% lowers I will sell as is. $120.00 each and I'll engrave a name and serial # on it/them for that price.

You can see the graining in one and one little chip where a casing hit the other one out at the range.

A couple of questions:

I assume engraving depth abides by ATF regulations? (sorry, making sure).

As far as graphics is concerned, what image format is preferred?

Curious, but who makes the 80%s? TM?

Thanks!
Mike

VaderSpade
10-29-2012, 8:19 PM
ATF regulations are only .003 deep. That's not very deep and is easily reached.

File Import - DWG, DXF, EPS, AI, PDF
Image File Import - BMP, JPG, TIF, GIF
Bigger file work better & black and white is best.

These are TM 80% lowers.

A buddy of mind DuraCoated one for me and one for himself. Mine turned out great in Coyote Brown. His not so much :( I think there was oil involved, little voids kept showing up and as he tried to fill them everything else got filled as well.
I think someone with more experience could do just fine.

I have done text on the TM 80% 10/22's. There is not a lot of room for an image once it's mounted in a stock. 1911's are on the list, I'll get some practice in as soon as that group buy comes through.

All though I have not Duracoated any of the lowers engraved by Vader I do know he produces quality work.

I also know(from experience) that when spraying duracoat on a engraved piece you won't fill in the engraving if you are spraying them correctly. I have never filled in any engravings when spraying duracoat unless I was doing a Color fill and dropped the paint directly into the engraving.

Vader's engravings are deep enough and should not pose a problem when duracoating them.

Vader,

I want to buy a couple of your lowers soon. Will there be ordering information on your site and all necessary links for jig purchases on your site or do you also sell the jigs needed to complete the project?

...........Or for anyone interested in giving me advice, who did you get the jig from and could you provide a link or items I would need?

I looked at CNC machining and they offer a very nice jig with a two plate combo (one for initial drilling and then the end mill plate) but they also offer a trigger hole jig and I am not sure what I need and do not need. Perhaps someone can help me out with my dilemma?

I do not have a mill but a nice drill press that would work just fine.

Thanks for the help

We need to move things around some but there's still room for everything.

been following the thread, and things look GREAT.

do you offer anodizing at all? black or colors, and if so, what price

thanks

I try to talk everyone into waiting until everything has been milled and drilled before anodizing, but then I can't do it.

I can Type II anodize in black an 80% lower after I have engraved it. The price is $25.00.

would you be able to customize parts if I were to deliver them personally? I have a few CA registered shooters I'd like too add a few more personal touches to.

Maybe at some point, I'm pretty busy right now, and I've been promising a few local guys a build party. The hardest thing is shifting gears and setup time.

The last few days I've been battening the hatches. The weatherman says we have 15 inches of rain and 50 MPH winds coming this week. I have a pretty good idea the lights will go out at some point. Well at least I can re-load shells by headlamp.

understood, I occasionally make it your way for snowboarding and r/c car racing. I'll keep that on the back burner.
In the meantime I'll be doodling up some designs for some good old tactical machiners.
I'm pretty new to calguns, so thank you for all the informative threads.
Talk to you when I get these designs done

Please forgive me for being a n00b, but 80% still needs machine work to be completed right?

I am wanting to put together my first AR and really want to cool custom lower and stumbled on you. However, I am thinking I need a lower that I can drop parts in.

Yes, the Fire Control Group Pocket, and trigger slot need to be milled out and the hammer, trigger, and selector holes need to be drilled.

Look for build parties in your area where they have all the tools and advice.

Just received two custom engraved 80%s from Mr. Spade. Couldn't be happier with them. Once I get around to building these, and I find some money, I would like to get a few more. Big thanks VADERSPADE! It was an easy and well facilitated process by you. I highly recommend.

It all depends on what you want engraved on it. The price starts at $105.00 plus shipping.

Send along any ideas and images you have for engraving and I'll see what I can work up.

No new orders before New Years Day, I need to take care of the orders I have, and make a little time for my family.

Things are completely crazy right now. I've been spending 6-8 hours a day just answering e-mails, and I've got lowers I need to engrave. If I don't get back to you right away I'm sorry.

If I have sent you images and we have something started give me a bump, you may be lost somewhere in the mountain of e-mails.

As I'm answering one e-mail five more come in. I'll be finishing up a bunch today and shipping them, but I can't seem to keep up with the e-mail. Again I'm sorry.

A few weeks ago VaderSpade was nice enough to send me a sample to shoot a little DuraCoat on, just to see how well it worked with his engraving. Well, fast forward a few weeks (work, family etc) and I knew I had to hurry up, get the sample painted, and get pics posted.

DISCLAIMER: I painted this is pretty near the worst possible conditions. It was about 36 degrees in the shop, and actually so cold I had to heat up the sample to get the DuraCoat to stick.

So that being said, the sample actually came out pretty well. I used the DuraCoat kit they call the "Shake and Spray" that includes everything you need to duracoat anything. I believe they say the kit will do 2 long guns. Anyhow, all things considered, the sample came out pretty well. I wouldn't hesitate to get one of these lowers, finish it, then hit it with DuraCoat.... once they're available again!

- couple of notes.. Sorry for the big pics. No time to resize them now.
Yes the shop is a mess. Thankfully it's not mine.

Third coat...
http://i153.photobucket.com/albums/s240/mistershanks/metal%20sample/IMG_2231_zps5c36cb89.jpg

Note that DuraCoat recommends 3-5 coats. This would have been enough paint, but I figured I'd take it all the way just to push the engraving to the limit..

Fourth..

also please note the flag is only one pass of the machine, so not as deep as the rest of the sample.

I'll get a pic of the sample today/ tonight now that it's had 24hrs to dry.

Okay, so it's been about 4 days drying since I sprayed the sample. The rough looking texture has calmed down and the sample looks great from a little more than a foot. You have to look really close to see the imperfections in the duracoat... and don't forget how bad the setup was! After seeing all this, I'm convinced VaderSpade does an awesome job, and his 80s and DuraCoat are a great pair! I can't wait to get my lowers in and painted!

Nice,,looks like a viable alternative to anodizing. Many yrs. back I used a product called Molykote on my Walther, very easy to use and lasted many yrs. before begining to wear on the high spots, good stuff, and still available. I recently got a receiver from Vaderspade and plan on using an olive drab cerrakote on it, once done i will try to put up some pics.

Vader, I know you must be extremely busy right now, but after the first of the year when you start taking orders, will you have any lowers left? I'm going to want 6-8 of them and I'd love to get them customized by you, but I also want to make sure that I get some before every supplier runs out of them. Thank you.

I have had and still believe I have a good and steady supply of 80% lowers. BUT that supply could be overwhelmed; there are no guarantees in life.

Panic buying has taken over. My typical sale was 1 to 3 lowers, that has jumped to 10-12. I see you want 6-8. Do you really need 6-8? Would you have ordered 6-8 a few weeks ago? If so why didnít you.

I will be more than happy to engrave your 80% lowers if you can find them somewhere else. That may be my main source of business if panic buying overwhelms the industry.

People have been sending me money that I have never been in commutation with; I guess they figure if I have their money in hand I owe them lowers. I will be sending back that money.
So far today even though I said no sales until after the New Year I have received 442 e-mails, and a bunch of PMís. I canít process that kind of volume.
I see that SBR has shut down their website and will NOT take phone orders. This is AFTER they announced that they would NOT hold anything for anyone. And they have a paid staff, Iím just a one man show.

Can you engrave an existing finished lower?

me109g4
12-20-2012, 5:26 AM
i believe that mechanical engraving through the anodizing will cause chipping around the engraving if i recall what Randy told me. I think engraving with a laser would be the way to go on an anodized receiver.

And for those bombarding him with PM's and e-mails, give it a rest for a few days and let him get caught up, its only him and i know he has been spending a lot of time answering questions instead of engraving.

VaderSpade

No, only an someone with an FFL * can engrave a finished lower and I don't have an FFL.

* Someone who does not regularly engrave firearms can do an occasional job IF the owner stays with the gun the entire time.
