Isn't the Saiga essentially an AK on layaway?

I bit on J&G's sale and bought a 7.62 Saiga. I've been thinking of it as an AK on layaway. I get to tell my wife that the gun cost $300.00, except for all of the other fees and conversion kits and whatnot...

Sure the conversion kit process costs a little more, but that is later. And I'll probably want to change the magazine back to standard. But still, 299!

I'm actually really looking forward to the conversion process. I know I missed the last build party, but can't wait for the next one. Let's go SoCal...

Lastly, J&G......good service really. Great price. Looking forward to my next transaction with them.

Same way I look at new kits to build plus I get a cool project to keep me out of trouble for a while.

It gets even more fun when I start cutting, and re-profiling, and re-crowning barrels. Chopping gas tubes, pistons, and furniture to do something unique, and one of a kind like this>>>>

Now that is some serious fun, and I bet you don't find anything like that for sale anywhere.
That's the draw for me. :43:

A converted Saiga is nice (don't get me wrong) but for me starting from a scrap pile of parts to build something 'one of a kind' just tickles me more.

yep, just like building an AR.

while it def looses to the "instant gratification" factor of buying something off the wall ready to go, I think there is a different kind of enjoyment still had when going bit by bit as a project

Brick, where you located and who did you use to do the transfer? And cost if you don't mind. Was thinking the same thought. ;)

Exactly. I have 4 more days till I can pick mine up. I see it as a fully functional firearm that will soon be a pistol gripped AK.

Yeah, and when it is done, it's not just any AK, it's a Russian AK. USSR style. Same factory even.

I've seen a Saiga at Turner's recently and compared it to a couple of different romanian builds. The Saiga really is a nicer gun. Fit and finish, even the sound and feel of it, beautiful gun. And the price is right (online at least).

As for the conversion process, I've been watching a lot of tutorials. I feel good about everything but the bullet guide. It seems like it's easy to mess that one up..... any thoughts guys?

Follow the tutorials, and I am sure you'll do fine for he bullet guide installation.
Easier for a Saiga than the one I just did for my M76 (drilled, and riveted as opposed to drilled, tapped, and screwed)

BTW: there are actual Russian AK kits available for purchase also.
I own a few of those as well.

Well while you saiga guys gotta wait 10 days in jail, I get to build my kit as soon as it arrives at my door. I have a saiga thats converted but it IS NOT comparable to a true russian ak47, or ak74.

Indobos, the shipping was 15 and some change. FFL and DROS combined were 75 through Ammo Bros. in Cerritos. Probably cheaper somewhere, but Ammo Bros is close for me.

Also checked in at Turners, and the guy seemed to quote something like 125. Seemed a little high.

What do you mean? As soon as the kit arrives at my door I can build it immediately usually takes me about 8 hrs

I'm in the same boat and excited as hell! Really though, at $299 you can't beat it. That's cheaper than my Remington 870! lol.

I'm in Riverside and I'm doing the transfer through Tom Reese @ Firepower Depot. Just got off the phone with him and he seems like a really great fellow to work with. On top of that, his FFL transfer fees are only $10! Plus DROS, comes out to $35. Give him a call..
