I've got a slight itch - Nobody I know locally shoots an AK, where do you suggest I seek info on a build? I'd love to sit in on a party.

I'd love to see someone put a build party together up here! We need to start bringing Calguns members together. Just need to find kits!

No kidding! I had to go it alone for my first build, a party would have been cool. Here's the link to the parts kit update thread, so you can get the best deal: http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/showthread.php?t=443301

I would be up for a Northern build party. I am sure there are some good places up there. I have most of the jigs and dies. Could also lend a press or two to the cause. Kits are everywhere right now. Curtis at AK builder has quite a few.

Oh, and I am sure with a little persuasion we could get Nico to come up too. He has some mad welding skills. Nico.... paging Nico...... (chirp chirp)

No, no kit. It's just an itch, I'm trying not to scratch, but I'm sure I will. It's on my list of TTD, but damned if my business as usual and the almighty dollar always seems to get in the way of what I really want to do.
Thanks for the update link.

i was planning on a pull threw "poor mans jig" myself, but that because i am poor ....lmao ... and can reconfigure it with a round bar someday for my kp44 build if i ever get back to that one

Arisaka

That's what i did. I have a press now, if i bend another i'll probably just use the same jig in the press. Worked pretty well!

I'm not too interested in AK's but I love building, and would like the know how.

My brother works at a body shop welding cars back together all day.

He welds some pretty thin stuff so I’m sure he could help us out. As I remember there is a pretty stout press at the shop also.

from what i got in searching a AK is a AK in general, just different configurations , all built about the same ... i still haven't decided if i want to use my under folder or a regular flat and go with a side folding ace stock .. i just go on price myself, but i am not a AK guy i just got the itch after pulling 300 out of the corning casino .....lol

btw anyone up here have a set of go/nogo guages they want to loan/rent when the time comes ?

I'm pretty sure the Romanian RPK kits you see for sale use a stamped (thicker) reciever. Bend a flat!

I do not think the barrel is intact... I might be inclined to get an AK builder kit if I were you. Finding a kit for less than 300 is pretty hard to find these days from what I have seen. I almost had a numbers matching Yugo under folder m70 for 320 a month ago though and those are going for bank.

If you are building your own, you should go with an AK builder flat or an NDS receiver IMO. Those kits have the proper barrel length already but if you get the under folder you do need to follow the above link to pin the stock. For 922r you should check the checklist that another member made up recently, I used ak builder slant break, NDS receiver, tapco g2 which is three, and a US made pistol grip like hogue. You can get a couple "G" kits on gun broker right now for about three, that is fully complete too.

Use 69mach1's build instructions- http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/showthread.php?t=292985

Ak-builder.com sells tools, maybe buy from them or get ideas to make your own.

Are you pretty handy with the lathe? Think I could talk you into turning down my Galil barrel? I can help with your build, and have a press (if you don't have one)

Recv'd my Romy G from WTC, quick efficient transaction everything matches with an '84 date. They included a sling of my choice to make up for the inability to include a 30 rnd mag.
Now the fun begins. Just gotta keep my priorities real.
That being said, I've gone over Mach69's posts/threads and as I'm a hands on guy is there any other links that will help my noobie-ness to the AK platform?

A build party is going to need:

A press (got it)
A welder, spot or MIG (I have a fluxcore)
A bernz o matic torch
modified bolt cutters (got em)
Jigs (don't have legit ones, only home made)
Dremel w/lots of bits (can always use more bits)
Am I missing anything? I'm pretty sure that's it. Oh ya, PATIENCE. Thanks for the update, JB-Norcal!

Arisaka
09-17-2011, 10:46 PM
Oh ya, I've never attended or put on a build party, I'm just guessing at the needed tools based on what I used to build one. Maybe a park tank and solution if you want to parkerize your gun.

SmellOfCordite
09-17-2011, 11:09 PM
Well I want to get into this, even if it is a small party. I have a dremel with all the fixins but that is everything I have in Chico, all the large items; mill, lathe, drill press, 40 ton press are in my shop in San Jose:facepalm: I forgot to mention I am building on an NDS 3 receiver too so I only need to crush some rivets and press in a barrel/ headspace so I could be around to help others too. I would love to get a park tank up and running, let me know if we need money for solution.

Jeepers
09-18-2011, 7:39 AM
i have dremil and one of Ryan's jigs, no park tank, but think theres a restaurant supply house on 273 (think its called cash and carry ?)that should carry S.S. steam table inserts that would do the job for a tank.. still havnt sent out my barrel and parts for headspacing/population yet, and also still short a few 922 parts and need to order my flat and rivets(or screw set if we dont get a party together) ....

edit would also need a blasting cab and media for doing park also

Ok we need to figure out time and place, as well as what tools everyone is bringing. Who wants to spearhead this? I live in a one bedroom apartment so I can't host but I will help in whatever way I can.

Arisaka
09-18-2011, 1:32 PM
We can have it at my house if you guys want, just so we don't have to move the press. You guys might want to consider rust bluing, I did it on my first build and it's not too hard. Really nice finish too, plus no need for the tank.

JB-Norcal

I haven't started prepping in any way, and the rest of my parts are ordered. Seeing as how I have zero experience and have the least to offer besides dremil/bits, torch, I'll try to go along with who can plan best. Who wants to take point?

SmellOfCordite
09-18-2011, 7:13 PM
Well I would take point on this if it wasn't my first AK build. I refinished my stock already and demilled the kit except for the rear trunnion. So I don't think I will have that much to do if I am not bending the receiver.

Does anyone think I will need the red star fcg retainer plate instead of shepherds crook? Also, if everyone hasn't bought their compliance parts we should take orders and save on shipping.

What we need is some more experienced builders to help make this happen.

Arisaka
09-19-2011, 8:59 AM
Either one will work, but the retaining plate works a little better. ^^

Arisaka

Honestly, I don't know if the thing is even necessary. When I reamed my pin holes, they are tight enough that the pin pops into place and doesn't show any signs of wanting to come out without being driven out from the other end. I don't think the pins are going anywhere either way.

So, we are waiting on a park tank? No date set yet? What are we missing?

what about early November? I think we should use the cost of the BP to go towards a park tank and I don't know what you have Arisaka(besides a press and some other tools) that we we need. Trigger guard jig, long rivet jig, Headspace gauges, Flat bending jig(for those that need a receiver), front rivet squeezer etc. We need to get a list going of what everyone has and possibly start a new thread for the BP itself. What do you think?

Arisaka
09-20-2011, 10:58 AM
I have a press, welder (not a spot welder, a fluxcore), reamer, Dremel, modified bolt cutters, and a homemade jig for pressing the barrel in. Jeepers has a flat bending jig. We need trigger guard jig, rear trunnion rivet jig, and a park tank/park solution. I am working on a Galil right now, I may pick up a kit to build at the party but if not I can just provide my stuff and place to do it. I've built one AK, around April so I can probably help out too.

Good stuff, since I want to get this BP rollin I am thinking of buying a rivet jig similar to the AKbuilder one and I already have the AKbuilder trigger guard rivet jig. What we need is a park tank, if not rust blue might have to do it.

What about the date? First weekend in November works for me, and it will give us time to get everything settled. Arisaka how many people do you feel comfortable having at your place? We should get a list going of who wants to attend and start from there.

SmellOfCordite

I forgot to add we need headspace gauges too.

Arisaka
09-20-2011, 4:20 PM
I'm cool with however many want to attend, I don't know roughly how many is a good number to allow everyone to complete their builds. I don't think that it will be effective with 30 people, everyone would be waiting to use the tools. Rust bluing is a process, it takes at least a week to do. It's not really a build party activity. Those who want to rust blue can look at the results on my build, see the product they need, and I can help them get started. It's a really sweet finish, I'm not sure I'd park now that I've blued. Any time is good, I know it's hard to wait when you have those parts staring at you. As long as it's on a weekend it should be cool. I'm in my busy season with work until the end of the year, but I'm certainly down to work on AKs on a weekend. Just let me know!

SmellOfCordite
09-21-2011, 8:23 AM
I have been reading up about parkerizing and it seems that we should be media blasting our parts before we do or it will not turn out well. I think we should have this first build party to just work on putting the AK's together, then we can think about having a parking party. I would want to blast my receiver first before I did any parking to get the most out of the process. What do you think?

Arisaka
09-21-2011, 9:39 AM
Agreed. It's really all about getting the reciever put together and the barrel pressed in. The rest (refinish the wood, blue/park/etc) doesn't really require the tools (press, welder, jigs) that make building your first AK cost prohibitive.

09-21-2011, 1:39 PM
