+1 on the CMMG, very reasonbly priced, especially if you go through Shadow65.

The Tacsol uppers are probably one of, if not the, best AR-22 upper on the market.

CMMG makes great uppers too, with closer functionality to a normal AR upper, and they're inexpensive.

Model1Sales actually makes a very good, very inexpensive .22 upper.

Nordic is pretty new to the game, but their upper is getting stellar reviews.

Stay away from the velocity firearms and chiappa/ATI uppers. They're just not built well.

Here's what I would recommend depending on your budget, in this order:
1.) TacSol if you don't mind spending a little extra to get more quality.
2.) CMMG if you just want good, solid, affordable, middle-of-the-road.
3.) Model1Sales for the best bang for the buck on a budget.

If you're building a dedicated AR-22 make sure to use lightened trigger and hammer springs. To get better lock time with the lightened springs (and increase reliability), cut the tail off your hammer too. You'll also want to make sure you have a rounded style hammer:

If you're building your own lower, just make sure the parts kit that you get has the rounded hammer. You can't go wrong with Stag. If you're buying a lower pre-assembled and it comes with a notched hammer, just buy a new hammer. They're about $12.

When picking out a stock, you can save a little bit of weight and money by not buying the spring and buffer. They are not used by the .22 uppers at all and you lose nothing by leaving them out.

My CMMG 22 has given me almost no problems. I would say its about as reliable as my 10/22 was, possibly more so.

Had a tac sol, didn't like that it wouldn't eject a live round.

Still haven't gotten to test for accuracy, BUT I JUST GOT MY DMS-1!!!!! So next time I get a chance I will throw ten different types of rounds through conditioned bore.

My CMMG has been awesome... i have looked at the BCG on my buddies Tacsol and it looks to be better designed. It is more robust looking and will probably last longer is my guess...

However... the part that fails on my CMMG is this...

http://cmmginc.secure-mall.com/item/.22-LR-Receiver-Plate-Assembly-1344

But it fails after thousands of rounds generally so the $25 isn't a big deal.... although I've never had to pay the $25 since CMMG just keeps sending me free ones. Great customer service.

I really like my Nordic Components upper. However, they are hard to come by and I believe you need to call them to get on a waiting list.

+1 for CMMG. I have one and love it! Very accurate and reliable. I did have a problem with mine, but I had a earlier version bolt carrier and they have since updated/fixed that problem I had with mine. CMMG did give me a updated bolt carrier group at NO CHARGE. Other than that, the upper runs like clock!

Check my thead in the Rimfire section.
