I bought a police trade-in Sig Sauer P220. Only the slide had a lot of wear on it, so ,along with a friend, we duracoated my Sig P220 and my Maverick 88 shotgun. They turned out great and I will post pictures to follow.

On the Sig, duracoated just the slide and on the Maverick 88 we duracoated the barrel and magazine tube.

We duracoated the items in matte black, or as my friend's daughter called it, "dead zombie black"

Nice job, zombie black is nice. Question for the masses. Is the p220 "the" sig to have? Which one is the most desired sig?

Overall, I think its a toss up between the P226 and P229, that is to the masses.

P220 is especially those looking for a 45 (the 9mm are in much less quantity). I look at the P220 essentially as a more modern, "Euro-fied" 1911. If you're into 1911s and shooting 45s, you'll probably like the P220 better than the other 2, especially if you're looking for a single stack.

As far as to the die-hard Sig people, a lot seem to think the P228 as the epitome. Also most the hardcore ones seem to prefer railless.

OP: That dura-coat looks nice. Did you do it yourself? My friend is thinking of refinishing one of his Steyrs and this may be an option rather than simply blueing it.

Very nice! Several questions, did you guys bake the finish, did you mask or remove the sights when painting, and was the media applied with a rattle can or air brush/ spray gun? Please also let us know how it holds up.

Oh, and if you removed the sights, how did you push them back in without pealing or chipping the new finish.

My friend, who also happens to be my firearms instructor, and I prepped by taking .220 sand paper and sanding off the bluing. Next we decreased with lacquer thinner and brake cleaner. We did this twice with the thinner and once with the brake cleaner, also we wore vinyl gloves so that the oil from our fingers would not stay behind. after the parts we throughly dru we applied the first coat, let stand, then applied a second coat. As Darren points out below, we added a third coat along the slide where it would receive the most holster wear.

No baking of the finish, just let it dry overnight, before putting it on the frame. We masked the sights. It took a lot of patience to get the painters tape small enough to mask the sights and leave everything else exposed. We also covered up the underside of the slide from the extractor/ firing pin channel all the way back to the backside where the hammer strikes.

The duracoat was applied with a cheap $9 airbrush hooked up to an air compressor.

Just to clarify, as I am the friend / firearm instructor that helped on this:

We used 220 grit sandpaper to remove the bluing as much as we could, which is a bit rougher then Lauer Weaponry recommends but doesn't mar the appearance of the firearm, and on sensitive areas (such as the sights) we used a Scotch Brite pad.

Degreased 3 times (2 times with lacquer thinner, once with brake cleaner), wiped it with 100% cotton white towels all while wearing vinyl gloves. You want the towels to come out clean after the wipe down and to use degreaser that leaves no residue, this step is VERY important, anything left on the firearm will cause the Duracoat to chip later on down the road easier.

Taped the night sights, the breech face, where the hammer strikes the firing pin, and the part of the slide where the barrel locks up (have seen others that had problems with tight tolerances on this spot before).

Followed the 12:1 mixture recommendations and did at least 2 coats (about 5 minutes between coats) and then did hit the spots a third time where the holster will rub the most. Did not use any thinner or reducer just 30psi on the compressor and a Harbor Freight Airbrush ($9).

Leave apart overnight, assembled it the next day, recommend not shooting for quite a few days. Duracoat is like the candy shell on an M&M and needs time to fully cure on the inside as well or else it will chip easily.

Part of my requirements for doing this was:

1. Didn't want to have to bake anything and stink up the house
2. Don't have a blast cabinet to rough it up with Aluminum Oxide
3. Wanted something with a lot of color options that was better then bluing that likes to rust real easily
4. Wanted something that was relatively easy to apply and not just "Krylon Camo", which has its place but I am not in the mood to redo this for a couple of years.

Hope that helps to clarify things a bit more for you guys!

At first I didn't want to either, it was one of the most unnatural feelings I had. But, after I saw the finished product I was happy.

I hate when I show up late for the party.

Very nice job. Did you use the "Shake N' Spray" or a airbrush?

Edit: I should read all the post better too

I love them!!! The stock sig grips are cool and all, but those Hogue grips are way better. I feel a better grip once I draw. I've heard some people say that they had to shave off a little bit on the left side where the decoker lever is, but overall they have been a worthwhile addition, and for under $20 they were worth the money.

Yes it did, the frame was already in good shape and I'm glad I did the slide.
