Silly question and I apologize if this is a repost, but why do some US soldiers wrap duct tape on their magazines and around the end of their buttstocks on their m16s?

mags is to connect mags for quick mag change

buttstock i'm guessing is for higher cheek weld

Was taught to do that by my sf drill Sgt. Keeps them from rattling against each other. Also if you need duct tape, just roll it off the mag

I only used duct tape on mags with a 550 cord looped; hence the creation of magpuls.

In the buttstock, we used to also looped 550 cord and duct tape to modify our 2 point sling into a patrol carry.

Pretty much covered it. To prevent noise and to create "ranger pulls."

This was one of my magazines overseas...

We used it for labeling our gear. Name, rank, and unit.

This... Also used it to create mag couplers. Stick a piece of fired brass in between 2 magazines and start wrapping 100 mph tape around the base and wahlah, insta-mag coupler.
