"Not long after U.S. forces invaded Afghanistan, al-Qaeda and its Taliban allies came to realize that America’s 5.56x45 mm NATO infantry rifles lost most of their lethality beyond 500 meters. "

I interpret the article that the bad guys are not using the std AK round, but a heavier MG round that has a better reach. It says they are firing at longer ranges then vacating before arty or air strikes.

Lots of early 20th century bolt actions being used in A-stan. Mausers, enfield, mosin etc etc.
Full size .30cal rounds stay lethal at longer ranges, nothing new here.

I think they are having more problems with insurgents using PKM's at least I think that's the one that fires 7.62x54r.

What!?!? The .223 isn't a long range round... no way?!?

 Seriously, was this a secret? Still doesn't change the fact that most modern gun battles remain within 400 yards and that is where the .223 is effective. Mission drives the gear. If this was a serious issue we wouldn't be kicking as much *** as we are kicking in A-stan.

Uh, it would appear to be a serious problem if the military says its a problem, considering there is usually a delay from what is happening in the field versus what gets discussed and studied at home behind desks by politicians in the military. Well, at least your not one of those that think the 223 and the AR is perfect for everything including hunting african big game.

Dear Lord, Please help the military to switch to 6.5 grendel so I can get lots of cheap ammo Amen.

LOL... yeah none of us saw this coming.

To be honest, I was totally against it. After speaking to several Vets, I changed my mind.

I really hope not. I have seen too many broken bolts.

Also running out of ammo and not being able to be resupplied by allies who might be a hell of a lot closer is about the worst thing we could ever do to our boys and girls.

The M14 is a great old battle rifle and these guy's are
working hard to enhance it for the modern battlefield.
