I always want one, & finally found it: a Mod.98.
This is a RC with dual marking "bcd/ar 42" with all markings not peened & still visible.
Bore is nice & shiny, a solid rifle & I can't wait to shoot her (340 rounds of ammo is on its way).
Hopefully someday I'll own the non RC, all matching but meanwhile I will enjoy this one for sure.

Some shots:

Yes, and I was debating to get both of them because the other one is an "ax" which is also rare, but finally I would able to control myself :D

Thanks^^. By the way, I like the look of walnut stock better than this laminated stock. Do you know where to get one?

actually, yes:

http://k98stocks.com/

these were stocks that were turned in to the Norwegians after the war ended

but by '42, the flat butt plate walnut stocks had been largely replaced by the laminated beech cupped butt plate stocks like what your rifle currently has. just FYI.

Nice looking K98. Mines also a RC if you want to check it out and compare it. http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/showthread.php?t=259249

I want more K98's but all the other ones I've seen are not worth the price people are asking, local gun shows that is.

That's funny, because I think the same way about your stock, looks like yours is nicer :)

I don't like how mine has the Russian Orange oil added to it. I can't for the life of me remember what the oil is called at the moment. Yours looks more original.

I think the walnut stock is much nicer. I found one, but the seller wants almost $300 for it :(, so I think I'm gonna wait.

Yeah original stocks, slings etc can cost just as much as the rifle it self.

Yeah, I hear you. How did yours shoot? People say it's pretty accurate, but I haven't shot mine (still waiting for the ammo).

NaughtyMonkey

Did you buy surplus ammo? I get mine from Ammo to go, pretty cheap ammo.

Mines a great shooter! More accurate then I expected, can usually hit the metal targets 4 out of 5 shots. Then again the surplus is from 1955. haha.

Yes, I got mine from AIM Surplus.

the Russians added shellac. it can be removed and returned to a more German look if you'd like to try it.

this is how i did it and the results are great

you'll need Citristrip, denatured alcohol and something like boiled linseed oil or Howard's feed'n wax. all available at Lowe's or Home Depot

remove the metal from the stock, I.E. take the barreled action out. leave the take down discs in the butt of the stock though as they're riveted in

1. Brush citristrip on to stock. leave on for 10+ minutes, wipe off with towel
2. let air dry for a few minutes
3. use cloth with denatured alcohol to remove left over shellac & citristrip (use rubber gloves)
4. wipe off stock
5. denatured alcohol again. let dry
6. let stock sit to draw out any remaining cosmoline and shellac
7. if any present, wipe down stock
8. if a lot of cosmoline is present, wrap stock tightly in paper towels and place in plastic bag. then place bag in direct sunlight. don't let stock cool before wiping down
9. apply Boiled Linseed Oil with a fine brush. you'll need to wipe the excess BLO off with a clean, preferably cotton, cloth.
10. let dry for a few hours. use as many coats as you want, but usually 2 is fine

Thats it Shellac! hahaha. Thanks mauser98K. It was bugging me that I Could not remember haha. But I'll probably just leave it how it is though.

T0kie, I noticed something that is odd about your K98 RC, it has a cleaning rod, most RC do not have cleaning rods. haha. Mine doesn't.

Capture screws are the little screws that hold the larger triggerguard assembly screws in place.

http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o149/SgtPnkks/spanish%20m1944/07.jpg

As part of a disarmament treaty with the West, the USSR removed the sight hoods, cleaning rods, and capture screws from the RC's, making the rifles "unsuitable for military use", then packed them away for later.

t0kie, does it have the X on the receiver marking its a RC?

not all Russian captures have that mark.

other more solid indicators are the serial number on the buttstock (although if the number is vertical, it's a Yugo capture) and the use of electro pencil to force match parts.

No it doesn't, but it has the import marking underneath the barrel (C.A.I).

Me too, I'm totally newbie for this.
I suspect may be the cleaning rod & the hood were added by the prev. owner, but about the capture srews I'm not sure. are those screws are usually appear only with non RC rifles?

Like I said, the Russkies removed the SH, CR, and CS to make the rifles unusable.......which was BS. We probably ashcanned some nukes in exchange.

The previous owner did a nice job of recreating the rifle, even though the SH and CR are probably replica.

These guys know an amazing amount, and always like to see pictures. They are pretty gentle with noobs too:

First of all, they aren't "capture screws". That misnomer came from Classic Arms and unfortunately it has become widespread through repetition. The actual German name for the part is Halteschraube, which translates as "stop screw" or "retaining screw".

http://guns.wolfcrews.com/mauser/K98kimage1.jpg

As to why Russian Capture K98k's don't have them

Different theories have been proposed, but the most likely one is that those parts were non-essential and they were melted down as scrap.

The Soviets took the captured\surrendered rifles apart down to the barreled receivers and grouped the parts by type (triggerguards, upper bands, lower bands, firing pins, handguards, rear sights, etc.) In order to take the rifles apart they would have had to remove the cleaning rods, sight hoods (if present), and retaining/locking screws. Those parts are non-essential and it probably wasn't worth the trouble to refinish and reinstall them.

Installing an original K98k sight hood isn't easy, they were made from very stiff spring steel. The stop or retaining screws are tiny and not essential - even the Germans eliminated them late in World War II. Once the rifle was disassembled those parts would be more trouble installing or keeping track of than they were worth so the Soviets probably just recycled (scrapped) them.

Well that all makes sense too. Although I think the SH are pretty important because the sights stink otherwise, and a pair of reverse pliers gets them on with ease.

LOL, so that's why those little parts were removed? It's not like it really matters. Besides, who cares, when there would be a metric crap ton of Type 1 & 2 AK-47s available by the next decade?
