man you can drop a ton of $ into one of those very fast. Ask me how I know. I started with a Target model that was already very accurate and then replaced everything on it except the receiver and the bolt and it still shoots very accurate. problem I have is same I have always had with it. Its just so accurate at close range its boring to shoot. like shooting with a laser I feel. Its my least favorite gun to shoot by far. I could make it a little more interesting by streching it out further 100yrd+ but 22LR is pretty weak IMO past about 50yrds even for paper punching...

IMO you are much better off getting a nice cheap bolt gun in 22LR. something like this....

My cousin just bought one of those and its a blast to shoot. open sights would be even more fun to shoot though as it adds a little more challenge to it. This is what I want!

You can use any mag that you already legally own. Basic federal laws apply like, it can't be shorter than 26" over all. Rimfire rifles are exempt from Ca AW laws.

no, you cant get the mag, but the folding stock is still cool! i just took my old 10/22 and tossed it in the butler creek folding stock. it comes in over 26", so its perfectly fine. rimfire rifles dont need a bullet button for cool features.
they probably still make those 10rd shuriken mags where they latch together, and you simply rotate them when the ten rounds are up... lemme see if i can find them...

so how much is a new ruger and is it worth buying new or used?

sevensix2x51

the older ones are generally better constructed, better finish in/on the receiver, and a metal trigger group. but if you cant find one, new ones are just fine, im sure.

looks to me, you should be able to find one in the low $200's...

I bought mine for 220 ish with a digital camp finish from bass pro. Actually it was gifted to but whatever.

I've seen similar prices at turners and the local shops. If u want all aftermarket stuff it might be better to just piece one together especially if u don't mind used.

My uncle has several and one of them was from their very first or second year they were made. Countless thousands of rounds and still 2-3moa with cheap ammo

Just to give you a rough estimate of cost, summarized below are the common modifications to an "ultimate 10/22".

New Hammer, Sear: 60(?) (You can stone the factory for free)
New Barrel: 100-200 depends on how ninja you want to get (You can re-cut the chamber for free if you have the metal working tools, look up nemohunter's work on rimfirecentral)
New guide rod: 40-60 (You can polish the Ruger Factory for Free)
Polished bolt/radiusing/firing pin pinning: 50-60 (You can polish it for free)
Bolt Buffer: 5
New stock: 80-200
Optics: 30-150 (a cheap red-dot to a Nikon/Mueller)
Extended mag release: 5(?)
Magazine loader: 15 (Not necessary but it will save your thumb and allow you to eat through the ammo)

So an easy upper end would be 700 without the cost of the gun. If you purchase it new you are talking something like 900 to 1000. I'd suggest you review the 10/22 modding section at Rimfirecentral and decide what you can do yourself. You can quickly have an expensive gun that you cant sell for 500 bucks.

No, I think he means something more like this:

http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p43/csacannoneer/001-7.jpg

The stock was welded open during the Federal AW ban and then ground off in 2005. Extended mag release, modified bolt release, Butler Creek tapered carbon fiber barrel, Tactical Inovations alluminum mags, etc. Now, I jst need to get see through rings and HK type irons for it.

BTW, this configuration would be a SBR (in California) without the flash hider. Be careful if you put a 16" barrel in a BC folder, it does not make the 26" length!

sevensix2x51
12-21-2010, 5:09 PM
that baby would give away my position! it should be fine for zombies and pirates, but counter ninja operations require clandestine operations!
is that welded open for the old federal ban?

CSACANNONEER
12-21-2010, 5:14 PM
It WAS welded open back in '01 or '02 when I built it. The weld has been cut for several years now. I have camo wrap for those missions when stealth is required.

can i hunt coyote with this?

sevensix2x51
12-21-2010, 6:55 PM
no, but you could sure piss one off, ill bet.

youd be better served by a centerfire rifle in the .223 range and larger...

I think Turners is also running a sale on these right now for around $225

can i hunt coyote with this?

Yes:

If you are good with your rifle and know when to shoot, and know when you are out of range for a clean kill.

But naturally a .223 or bigger is going to be better for hunting game like coyote.

my old ramline folder with a 1980's vintage 10/22 measures out at 26" exactly, why is that butler creek equipped rifle well under 26"?

I am measuring from the muzzle (no flash suppressor) to the end of the knuckle (or hinge I guess you'd call it) on the stock. Is that an aftermarket barrel? Are stock Ruger barrels 18"?

you could try a Trimag ;)

You made a good decision in a 10/22. Get on rimfirecentral and visit their "tactical 10/22" section. Its full of ninja nuts like you :D

Dude, a .22 LR has plenty of punch at even 400 yards. It just wont be accurate by that point. My favorite .22 hit was 150 yards at a 3 liter soda, made it spray all over. Wind and bullet drop is huge at that range with .22, Dont tell me its not fun at 100+ yards. Its a real fun challenge to me at least. :chris:

Good post. I am currently shooting 1.5" groups @ 100yds with a Williams Receiver Peep sight on a CZ. Goal is to shoot MOA @ 300yds. It can be done, I know someone who does it like it was 50yds. Of course its more of an artillery shot than a rifle shot.:taz:
