View Full Version : What rifle comes to mind?

MilSim

Me and friend had this discussion, what the first weapon that comes to mind when you here the term Battle Rifle. Not a biased position just what pops into your head first thing. For me it was the M14, don't have one but for some reason when I hear that term thats the first picture that pops up. So what comes to everyones mind when they hear that term?

I find it interesting why most people say things like the Garand, Fal and M14. Im wondering if these rifles are synonymous with battles, not any battles the battles we read about in history books an movies get made about. When I think of a battle I think of two clearly defined sides, not what where doing now with the guerrilla tactics and all the enemy dressed in plain clothes. I know in Nam there was allot of that but you still had the NVA which was a uniformed military. Just my two cents on it, but the M14 is the one that pops for me. I can totally see the Garand and the other older rifles mentioned as being contenders, there is no real right answer to this, just individual perception of said term.

Personal opinion...

9 time Expert with the M16A2 and having shot a lot of "Rattle Battle" with the M14

I'd take a 20-round M14 for my "long range" gun and an AK platform gun for the SHTF scenario - assuming I could transport all the ammo.

As it is, budget dictates 300 WSM for my long range security and a mix of 30-30, .243 and 22 LR for my closer in needs. Several shotgun and handgun platforms flesh out my plan.

The FAL for sure, especially b/c I grew up in South Africa. It was used by the Selous Scouts and the SA Armed Forces. My uncle also used one to protect his farm & I believe he still has it.

I've always thought the definition of "battle rifle" was a select-fire full size rifle firing a high powered rifle caliber. I thought the M16 was classified as an assault rifle because it uses a medium size rifle cartridge (5.56). So i guess by my definition it would be an m1 garand, FAL, G3, and even the AR-10. The first one that popped into my head was the m14 though.

You should definitely wiki it because the FAL had a long and widespread history of usage by a laundry list of "free" countries around the world. It is arguably the most battle tested 7.62x51 semi-auto rifle in history, with much of its operational usage occurring in South America and Africa.

QUESTION:

.

Israeli Military used it from the late 50s to the early 70s, but then the transitioned to the m16 and the Galil. The FAL was not conducive to desert warfare, the sand & dust repeatedly jammed the rifle. It served it's purpose for decades though.

In the 70s, the Selous Scouts used it during the Rhodesian War. Read up on them when you have a moment, incredible soldiers.

South American countries have used the FAL for decades as well.

More recently, Argentina vs UK with the Falkland Islands War. The UK troops had semi-auto FALS and the Argentinians had full-auto FALS, as the story goes, the UK troops would exchange their semis for the captured autos.

Look up the FAL on wiki, it'll talk about it's development, rather interesting to see how and what it was born from. It basically took everything that was used and learned in WWII, Allied and Axis, about a battle rifle and then developed by the post-WWII Western allies.
