View Full Version : Gunsmith to mod my Yugo 59/66

Just picked up an unissued SKS Yugo 59/66 w/ grenade launcher covered by a barrel sheath that is spot welded into place.

Since this rifle's integrity has already been marred by the importer, I'm considering taking off some of the weight and length from this rifle.

I'm considering either doing the full cut-down job and recrowning, or just the removal of the grenade launcher and sight ladder and replacing the GL w/ a muzzle break.

I'm looking for a gunsmith in the Los Angeles area that does this kind of work on SKS rifles. Any help appreciated.

go to www.surplusrifle.com, you can do it yourself, that's the fun part about milsurps.

Why don't you just buy a M59 sell the bastardrized M59/66 and save money on not using a gunsmith, and spending it on ammo instead?

IMHO, it's not worth it. The SKS shoud be under $200 (including DROS...etc). The gunsmithing will cost you another several hundred bucks, at least. You do the math.:)

Do it yourself man... all it takes is a pipe cutter, a hack saw, a hand drill, some files and a MAPP torch to silversolder the sight back on.... I welded mine.

Gah, I wish you were in Norcal, I'd offer a trade for my M59 :(

Ok, I'm convinced. I'm gonna do it myself. I'll leave the work to a minimum.

I'd like to remove the grenade launcher and replace it with a simple screw on muzzle break.

Anyone have experience with removing the barrel sheath that the importer spot welded over the GL?
The sheath changes the diameter of the GL and renders it inoperable (CA legal).

It's just a steel tube placed over the GL and welded to it in several spots on one side along it's length. The launcher's threaded attachment to the barrel looks to be intact. However, I can't get to the GL's pin. I'll need to remove that pin to unscrew the GL. I'll post some pics next week if necessary.

I don't wish to cut the gl off because I don't want to recrown.

I have no tools at present. What might I need to remove that sheath?

Any help appreciated.

You looking for a straight-trade off? Heck, I've been looking to sell/trade my 59/66 for a 59

I would just grind the sheath off. Its got spot welds, go thru them, remove the sheath, push out the pin and remove the GL...

Be warned, it took a pipe wrench and a 2' cheater bar to get MY grenade launcher off....

Take some pics of the sleeve and send them to me if you can, Ill walk you thru it. You might have to go buy a $20 grinder at harbor freight and a pipe wrench, punch set and cheap hammer. But at least you own the tools when you're done!

Thank you very much for your reply! I'll get pics up next week.

I've read post describing how tough it can be to unscrew that sucker. I'm willing to give it a go.

Hey Guys, please post pics, I've been interested in removing my InterOrd sleeved-GL while still keeping the original barrel & threads intact.

rkt88edmo,

If you have a digi cam available right now, maybe you could put up some pics of this sleeve and it's spot welds so that others can determine how to remove it.

I'll have a cam next week and post pics if nobody else beats me to it.

What sort of grinder will I need to get. Would a dremel do the job. Or do I need something heavier?

I found a great thread on sksboards that deals with this removal.

Pics and everything.

Dremel would work, but a $20 4" hand grinder would be a lot faster, especially with a sanding disk on it (120grit or so)

Cool link from SKS Boards.

Is this a power tool? If so, what brand for $20?
Do you mean an angle grinder?
I'm not in the least knowlegeable when it comes to tools.
I can use them just fine though.

I heard with a little bit of duct tape, you can get the grenade launcher working to shoot out small superballs.

Hey, great idea!! That would certainly save money on 7.62x39 ammo!!;)

Just need to say that Harbor Freight and Tool is one cool place. This store will quickly turn me into a tool whore. And my wallet won't suffer. Thank you.
