View Full Version : AR extractor advice

I took out my new AR today and managed to get 2 rounds to cycle before the extractor stopped extracting. I was using regular WW .223. Looks like the extractor has no hook left to grab the rim.
I see there are several choices of extractors out there including some described as heavy duty.

Any opinions on what extractor I should pick up would be welcome.

Out of curiousity who made the extractor/bolt group? Your 100% sure it is the extractor? For extractor replacement I wouldn't look at anything that isn't the BCM Sopmod Upgrade Kit (http://www.bravocompanyusa.com/BCM-SOPMOD-Bolt-Upgrade-Rebuild-Kit-p/bcm%20bolt%20upgrade%20kit.htm).

I would go back to where I bought it and talk to them. This should not be happening on any new rifle.

weird are you shooting steel cases and they got stuck?

It might just be a bad run of extractor. It happens from time to time.

Shooting brass. The bolt assy is from a Del-Ton upper I got online. Not high end at all and may have been defective from the start.
I figure I will pick up a good extractor and hopefully it will work better.

I have -2- Del-Ton's that had problems extracting.

Turned out it wasn't the extractor. Installed BCM spring kits, problem solved.

OK, thanks for the help.
Looking at my extractor there hardly isn't any lip to grab the rim. Is that how they are?

There should be a groove between the lip and the body of the extracter. The lip edge should have an obviously machined angle. If not...it's broken.

Brownells for a new one...or three. Make sure you get the latest spring assembly.

Thanks for the read quig. Since anything I order online won't get sent out for a few days I went to the LGS to see what they had. All they had was a DPMS field repair kit which included the extractor and spring.
The new extractor has a much better looking "hook" and the spring looks to be about twice as big wire with black insert.
With the old setup I could just push in with my thumb and insert the pin. With the new spring I almost needed pliers to get the pin in, so there is a lot more tension on the extractor.
The old extractor almost looks like they forgot to heat treat it.
I bet it works now.
Thanks for the help!

Did you add an o-ring upgrade? It is supposed to help with extraction. I bought them at the local Home Depot (#60 O-Ring), box of 10 for $2.

There is a pic of them installed in post # 1192 of this thread.
