Nice! Just when I thought that I could not use .223 to do long range shooting you post this up. I have been thinking about making the switch to a bolt gun for some longer range shooting over my AR.

Love all your vids man!

Great shooting with those little 50 grainers. Just wanted a fun challenge?

A .223 with the right bullet and barrel twist combo is gtg out to 600 plus yards pretty darn easily. And they shoot them in high power matches to 1000 yards all the time.

If you do decide to get a bolt gun in .223...try and get a fast(er) twist. 1:9 or 1:8 would be a good choice.

+1

I've shot my Savage 12FVSS 223 out to 1000 yards with surprising accuracy. Didn't think it could do it with 75 grain bullet out of a 1/9 twist, but it did. The 26" barrel definitely helped every bit.

Nice vids man. l am working up a load on some Sierra 77 gr. right now (for my bolt gun). Looking forward to hitting 10" or less at 500+ yards. Hitting squirrels at 250 yds with 50 gr V-Max's with no problem ( AR platform). Oh, no Amber in the video...bummer.

I used to shoot a match at pala with a rem 700P in .223 from 200-500 meters and our targets at 500 meters where about 3.5" wide by 9" tall or so. Those sucked but on a good day I could get 5-6 of them.

I have since re-chambered that rifle into a 6mmBR and its night and day.... I shot it last weekend at a 18" Sq steel plate somewhere around 1400yrds.

Thanks Stan. I've been looking at a "cheaper" scope for my next rifle. I had a mk4 on my 5r and sold that for financial reasons.

Now I'm in the market for a .223 tikka t3 or a sps tactical in .308. I dont know what to get first. Or I'm looking for a good deal on here or the Hide for a used rifle.

Nice shooting Stan. I need to either develop a load for my VSF or put a faster twist barrel on it. 1 in 12" doesn't stabilize much over the 55 grain factory stuff I've been shooting.

As far as glass, I've got a Leupold Mark II on top of it, and it's pretty damn good and about the same price as your Bushnell, but only 3-9x36. It works out just fine.

the new mag system I installed on it I can now take full advantage of those bullets.

Curious what you are talking about here.

I have the LRP setup from my service rifle days, and they work very well, but LRP got out of the business years ago. I believe he sold the idea to DPMS, which has since discontinued the line.

On Edit, Looks like you were talking about the mag for your Tikka, so never mind. For some reason I thought you were talking about AR mags.

Good job on the long shoot. I never shot long range into last month hunting at X9B , We set some targets up at 500 yards used some old 70's Greek Surplus 30-06 in the rem 700 was on paper no problem. It sure felt good to get something that far and it was very windy.

Can you shoot MOA with regular factory ammo at 100? Those are good looking guns for the price. How much? What kind of glass?

Pretty sure he said "regular" factory ammo. My Tikka 223 was one hell of a shooter but it would not shoot the lighter factory bullets well. 55gr bullets in Remington UMC ammo would do 2.5" groups at best. As soon as i ran some 62gr through it things got MUCh better. Some 69s and 75s were giving amazing sub MOA results!! Then i got into reloading and got many .25" groups using my handloads. ;)

my post was about how it isnt a big deal to shoot a target 550 yards away with a bolt action and optic without any gear on. yea its cool good job you did it. but a lot of people do. all the time. its not that difficult as long as you have a good zero.

Really do not understand what your issue is....I was not bragging on my shooting. Your right....it really is not that big of a deal to hit a 10" target at 550 yards with a decent rifle and ammo. In fact...I normally am shooting for groups and score. So hitting that 10" gong was not that hard at all.

I mainly did it cause I was bored. And to show what a $550 Tikka rifle and VARMINT (you know...not target or match grade ammo) ammo can do. Oh yeah...don't forget the 10 mph wind.

But your coming off as one of those folks who can always one up someone. There is way more to hitting a target at long(er) ranges then just equipment. We get folks like you often who show up to our 1000 yard bench rest matches. And you hear them talking (loudly) to others of the same ilk about how it would be no problem for them to shoot a 3" group at 1000 yards if they had "one of those rifle".

I generally ask them if they want to shoot my rifle after the match. And then watch them not able to hit the 8" x 14" steel targets or even the 16" steel target with "one of those rifles".

Most the time if the guy is not a total tool...it is a humbling experience for them to realize that even with $7000 worth of equipment they were just using that there is a lot more to shooting that far and actually being able to REPEATABLY hit a target.

So from your comments I can pretty much tell you have never really shot long(er) range.
Any time you would like to come shoot out to 1000 yards with any of my rifles...you have a standing invitation.

I too have shot with open sights and a M-16A2 and A3 out to 400 meters...open sights...when I was in the Army. Again...whats your point of your comments?

Take care,Stan

my point? its not a big deal. simple as that. i dont own thousands of dollars worth of equipment, i shoot surplus ammo, no im not trying to one up you. im just stating the fact that its not difficult. there is no reason to brag about doing it with a bolt action and optics. and heres the thing about assuming my friends, when you do it you make an a55 outta u and me. dont think just because im not impressed and stated it that im trying to one up, that im a better shot, that ive never shot at farther distances. you pretty much took an acog to the qual range and then wonderd why you scored 40 outta 40. dont you ever tell me that im just some random bench shooter. you know NOTHING about me. all in all im done. excuse me for letting you know that its not impressive. do it blindfolded maybe then i would be. and wow 10mph, thats totally unheard of. especially during qualifications. im done, dueces, enjoy your shooting, enjoy everything you do, i dont care, i dont even know why i bothered to keep posting.

Every bit of info I get from experience long distance shooters like Stan and Randell, helps me improve on my long distance shooting without wasting money on the wrong equipment, range time and ammo. And I thank them for taking and making the effort and time to info us all. metalliman545 I guess you dont shoot for groups? care to post up some of your targets for us to view.

I have 2 Tikka T-3 Lites. One is a 6.5X55 and the other is a 7mm-08. I want to order a 33Fed when I can. All of mine wear Leupold Varri-XII 3X9X40 scopes and will outshoot me. Great guns as is my Savage in 204ruger with the heavy barrel.

I do not care if you shoot from a bench or with a reast or standing on your head. I do not care if you have open sights or scopes(unless it is a Trashco but that is personal) or if they are high dollar or not(I do love my 2 Nightforce scopes on my 50bmg's). I do not care if you are shooting a $10,000 or $200 rig(or less) I do not care if it is a 22RF or a wildcat or a boomer or special target cartridge. I do not care if you shoot paper targets/clay pigions/steel targets(get far enough away)/plastic(not glass bottles) or tin cans(as long as you clean them up) or a lawn mower engine running(again cleaned it up). I do not care if you are shooting for groups or just fun. Just as long as you enjoy yourself. I REALLY do not mind if you post about it here and if others get their panties in a bunch then they need to back off and lighten up. WE ALL should be doing what we do with firearms because we enjoy it. Talking about it here is just fine. "I personally" do not post much about my shooting as it is good but not as good before I got disabled and physically screwed up. I di not post photos of my pronghorn hunt since I was glad to shoot my 3 and not worry about trophies this year. I was hurting very much and was just happy to take my animals so I would have meat in the freezer. I did not even stay to shoot PD's this year.
I enjoy reading about others shooting. I enjoy going to the range and watching others(sometimes helping with problems) and shooting some myself. I have always loved to hunt and have been very successful if I may say so. I enjoy reloading. I enjoy kidding friends and such about shooting/hunting etc IN GOOD FUN ONLY.

If your offer to shoot would be good for someone else I would like to come up and try your target rifle(s). I would only shoot 1-2 rounds since I know you would not want too much wear on the barrel. I have a selection of rifles/pistols I could bring for you to shoot if you wanted. I have 204ruger to M1A to 50bmg and many surplus rifles.

Ok....the TAC was a little out of my range (too many bills and other rifle mods in works on my rem 700)....but, after hrs of comparing T3 models (and advice from the Tikka Rep himself...aka: Stan:), I ended up picking up a T3 Scout CTR in .223 from Buds.

Just need to endure the wait.....Thanks to Stan for taking time to ed-u-ma-cate me on Tikka....Looking forward to taking it out! :D

Well maybe I can get them to put me on the payroll ??? :D

This may sound funny but the best price I have found on Tikka's is through Sports Authority. They are Sako/Tikka distributors and can order whatever model you want.

Next would be Bud's Gun Shop: http://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/advanced_search_result.php?keywords=tikka&osCsid=airr9h8cl4caif6csn8vgdnr47&x=12&y=18

And looky! They show that they have a .223 Tactical.

Take care,Stan
