Hey folks,

I'm interested in building my first ar15 and I just had a few questions. Actually, I'm gonna do 2, a 5.56 chamber and a 7.62x39 chamber. This is the lower that I'm about to pull the trigger on(gonna buy 2):

http://www.spikestactical.com/z/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=104_65&products_id=52

http://www.riflegear.com/p-549-spikes-tactical-sl-15-stripped-lower-receiver-with-color-fill.aspx

One is marked as st15 and the other sl15. Couldnt get a straight answer from anyone as far as the differences but they both look the same. Just waiting for a response from a local ffl to see if it would be cheaper to do an out of state transfer or just pay for sales tax from riflegear as a walk in customer.

Anyways my question is will a regular 5.56 lower be ok to build a 7.62x39 ar or do I need to buy a lower specifically made for 7.62?

What are your guys' experience with 7.62x39 builds?

Have you had trouble finding cheap and reliable magazines?

Recommendations on good 7.62x39 uppers?

Obviously my choice for the 7.62x39 is the availability of cheaper ammo but will an ar15 have problems with the surplus corrosive ammo?

If so, then would there be another caliber you folks would recommend thats cheaper than the 5.56/.223 rnds? I'm not looking for handgun calibers either sorry...maybe in the future after this build ;)

Thanks in advance guys!

Scott

SL or ST, there is no difference. 5.56 and 7.62 can be used with most any AR15 lower including these.

i have not built a 7.62x39, can't say anything about uppers or mags. someone else will chime in on this.

i love my 9mm AR. look into one of those. (there's a link in my signature about 9mm AR's.) [ETA: NM, just read your thing about no pistol calibers.]

I would love to try a 7.62x39 AR...Was going to get Olympic Arms one when I was in WA but then I moved back down here.

dude, you got some really awesome ar builds in your profile! I'm really digging the paint jobs and the Magpul M93B Stock and UBR Stock.

ok so the local FFL charges $25 for each transfer plus dros which is $75 total for transfer.

buying out of state cost $273

buying local would cost $241 after taxes and dros

a good savings but now I got another Dilema...engravings!

spikes offers engraving for $5 each logo, these are the 2 I'm interested in for each lower:

http://www.spikestactical.com/z/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=104_23&products_id=54

http://www.spikestactical.com/z/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=104_23&products_id=55

That would mean $283 for a difference of $42 compared to local which DOESNT have engraving service.

Do you folks think $42 is worth paying for these logos? Does anyone know how much it would cost if I was to have these logos engraved outside?

Check out here for mags
http://www.cdnninvestments.com/ar15m16.html

Here is a place in San Diego that has built me a 7.62 upper
http://www.parallaxtactical.com/store/

Here is the upper he built for me he getting parts to build more in a few weeks
http://www.parallaxtactical.com/store/pxt-extreme-16-7-62x39-m4-profile-complete-upper-w-superbolt-898.html

One thing you want to remember is most surplus and Russian ammo use hard primers and some upper have problems igniting them. The one that parallax builds solves this problem with there bolt they use. I would not use corrosive ammo but that’s just me. I use wolf and it is cheap to get. And a lower is just a lower just make sure it is mil spec.

I just finished putting together my own AR15 in 7.62x39. I used a JD Machine lower receiver from Rifle Gear for $99 (http://riflegear.com/p-681-jd-machine-ar15-stripped-lower-receiver.aspx). A complete upper from Alpha Shooting Sports $449 (http://www.shop.ar15hardware.com/16-762x39-1-10-chrome-molly-A3-Gas-Block-upper-16a3gb76239cm.htm). A lower build kit from Palmetto State Armory $149 (http://www.palmettostatearmory.com/598.php). Magazines from 44mag.com $11.99 (http://www.44mag.com/product/762x39_magazine_10/7_62_39_ar15_magazines). Everyone was great to deal with and the lower and upper assembly were all supporting local vendors within California. Prices did not include shipping/tax/dros.
I'm very happy with my my build and stayed within my budget that I had set for it. Always try to support local vendors if you can. Especially when their prices are reasonable also. Hope this helps you with your decisions, I know how hard it is to decide what to get for it.

IIRC, Spikes names his lowers for his children, or family in some way. There was an old post at 1911.com, AR15 thread section, which listed the reasoning behind his designations. I will do a search and see if i can find it.

funny stuff....IT WAS MY POST..took 1 minute to find.....hahaha I have no idea where I originally found this...

Heres my post.<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

well either way, a st22 or cole its just the way he marked them. its a standard ar15 lower.

the onlt thing is a ca-leo may have issues with it. most leo will not. i dont think there is any law against it.

FYI ON SPIKES

These are the Meanings of the Model's.

ST-15 (ST = Spike's Tactical)

SL-15 (SL = Spike's Lower)

SLP-15 (SLP = Spike's Lower Pistol)

These are the meanings of the Serial Number prefixes.
