View Full Version : Do I need to do anything about this?

The gun I shoot IDPA with was purchasedwithin the last 10 years here in CA. All of my mags are supposed to be 10 rounders - hence I just load until full. At our last match I got a procedural for having 11 rounds in my mag! I checked and sure enough, this one mag now holds and feeds 11 rounds. This is a factory magazine that came with the pistol.

Do I need to correct this or am I OK to just keep and use this magazine? Opinions?

Thanks!

safer to fix it

Fix it or buy a new one. I would buy a new one if they are not expensive.

You might want to check the follower. I have a 10-rounder which was accepting 11 rounds, and it turned out the follower was damaged. I left it alone (aside from marking it) and noticed that it was the one mag in my set which had occasional feed issues. I figure that extra one round is not worth the chance of a type-3 at some time when I really can't afford it.

I didn't hear that it was illegal to own a hi cap mag in CA.

For the record the OP did not say it came with the new pistol he bought. Has he had this mag for more than 3 years? Just wondering. Not condoning anything illegal!!

If it came with a Rostered handgun you purchased at a CA FFL (i.e, not via PPT) after SB15 became implemented/active, the CA DOJ and test lab approved it for sale ;-)

It means the pistol was designated as not-unsafe, but you already knew that ;)

"How many rounds did the magazine hold when you bought it?"
"Ten"
"How many rounds does it hold now"
"It goes to eleven"

I'd get it fixed.

I have six Glock brand, factory magazines for my Glock-34 and I can get 11 rounds into each one of them. My friend has seven for his Glock-17 and they all take 11 rounds.

Just count your rounds when you do IDPA and keep using it.

Better yet, mark it, and use it for your first mag in a string at IDPA. You load to 10 plus 1 to start, so no more barney mag needed...

Lee,

Detrimental reliance - the DOJ FD approves the *package* for sale.

Drop testing is a gateway to approval, but approval is pure approval.
[This could've been used by S&W to fight the Walther P22 situation to have a less extreme resolution, but they chose not to fight.]

I'm actually curious since a 10 rounder that holds 11 could be considered a large cap magazine, and its not illegal to own a large cap plus you acquired it legally in the first place... Is there anything legally stopping you from now swapping a few parts to turn your 11 round large cap into a 17 rounder????

Edit: I admit this is a bit of a stretch

OP, the title of your post gives no clue as to what is inside.

As far as California is concerned, it is NOT illegal to possess a high cap magazine in the state. You're fine. Regarding IDPA, just use the 11 round mag as you first mag before starting the stage; 10 in the mag, one in the tube.

FWIW, it is not uncommon for mag springs to wear and allow an extra round to fit. IPSC guys consider this a good thing!

i would fix it seeing that the broken follower could be construed into being considered a situation where you illegally manufactured a "high cap" mag. cya play it safe.

I would just get it fixed or replaced. Not illegal, but why risk anything.

Put in a new spring, that should solve the problem.
