View Full Version : How to: install/replace the fiber in an FO front sight?

Like the subject says.

I got myself Dawson FO fronts which I love. The only problem is, I don't like how the gunsmith installed the fiber. Looks like he used heat to mushroom the rear end so it's bigger than I want it, and not symmetrical inside the sight outline. Also, the fiber looks dull compared to the spare. Basically, I suspect he F'ed it up. Does this sound right, and if not, what's the right way to do it?

the way i've seen it done is inserting the rod and taking a lighter to the end to soften it before pressing on it to flatten/spread it.

how shinny it is would depend on how smooth the surface press onto it was...i don't think you want it to be shinny as it would pickup glare.

is your spare a straight rod or is one end flattened already?

Don't blame the gunsmith. All the f/o I've bought have already had the rod installed.

Thanks! Just what I needed. Step 3b sounds like the way it should have been done, to make a nice small dot. Here is what it looks like instead:

Anything but "fitting snug and flush". And yes, it was the gunsmith. The sights had no rod installed, I saw them.
