While shooing at the range las weekend I went to go shoot my S&W 9mm, grabbed a full mag from my range bag slapped it in and let rounds fly. As the hammer was falling on the last round I had realized that I had forgotten to unload my mag of my home defense rounds, 14 moly coated BLACK TALONS that I've had since the mid 90's b4 they banned them to civilians for being to lethal. I was saving them for a special occasion, now I have only 6 left of the 20. Not a big loss in dollar value just sentimental, they were older than my kids. At least I know the 6 remaining will go bang!

Black Talon's were never banned... discontinued, yes.

You can still buy old stock BTs or new Winchester Rangers if you want to replace them.

I know how you feel OP, I've almost done the same thing and it pains me even to think of that.

Ranger Same Xact Thing. only difference is the black moly coating. If anything, the newer generation JHPs should be better.

-- Bullet designs like the Silver Tip, Hydra-Shok, and Black Talon were state of the art 15 or 20 years ago. These older bullets tend to plug up and act like FMJ projectiles when shot through heavy clothing; they also often have significant degradation in terminal performance after first passing through intermediate barriers. Modern ammunition which has been designed for robust expansion against clothing and intermediate barriers is significantly superior to the older designs. The bullets in the Federal Classic and Hydrashok line are outperformed by other ATK products such as the Federal Tactical and HST, as well as the Speer Gold Dot; likewise Winchester Ranger Talons are far superior to the old Black Talons or civilian SXT's.

You may as well fire the rest off and buy some new ammo. Or keep them as "collectibles".

I did that with my HD ranger sxt ammo not too long ago. I yanked out the mags and proceeded to shoot what was in them when I got there. Oh well, just a few bucks.

doesn't that make them hard to use in a pinch? I keep one of mine in a chamber and the rest in magazines

i had a brain fart at the range recently too...showed up with my new R700 and realized i left all my match grade 308 at home! had to fork over 57 bucks for 40 rounds of standard UMC.

also we were trying to hit the 100 yard target with the glock .40 lol...the range master wasnt too happy about that told us to stop haha. it was fun though i managed to hit the target once.

TOO lethal? Is that like too pregnant? I plan on shooting some of my hollow points and 00 buck next weekend. I want to feel if there is a difference from range ammo, see if hollow points loan well on my .45, and just make sure the guns like the real stuff. Not a bad thing to do once in a while.

I use to have my mag stoked with Black Talons for self defence in my .40. I replaced them with Winchester Ranger SXTs because I dont want to have to explain to a jury if I shot an intruder why Im using a round that carries a reputation like they do. I understand that it might be no big deal to some and that the SXTs are the same thing but I would rather say, "I used the same type of bullet that the Police use to protect themselfs sir"....

If you want to replace your BT's let me know, I've got a few boxes for sale.

I have an unlimited number of Black Talons for sale that I made from Ranger SXTs and a black Sharpie® pen.

Only $1 a round and that's a better deal than you'll find anywhere.

Remember the deadly "black Rhino" bullet the major news network morons were whining about? Only problem was that there was no such bullet;)

Well, at least you know that they cycle in your gun.

I had about 100 of each, 9mm and 45acp and sold them all. At the price they sell for, I was happy to get rid of them since they are too expensive to shoot.

I still have some of mine from when my former dept. used them back in the 1990s. They look lethal just sitting there in the safe.:D
