View Full Version : California Legal muzzle Break for SU 16 CA?
I had an oppurtunity to buy a Kel Tec SU 16 CA today, and decided to cancel my order for the savage/stevens 223 bolt action. What type of California Legal muzzle Break is made for the SU 16 CA?
Are there better rear sights for the rifle?
Has anyone mounted a 2-7x33 on this rifle.
I know this topic has been discussed so a link would help.
P.S. I read what TED, MACE, and others have written about this little carbine, but curiosity got the better of me. I returned a whole bunch of items so I thought, what the hell? I have my SHTF in the same flavor as MACE.
I also have WOLF 223 for sale on the "for sale" page (long story).

Regarding the CA legal Muzzle brake, I decided on the Bushmaster 'Izzy' Muzzle Brake. It is legal here in Cali, looks cool (it looks almost exactly the same as the 'Izzy' Flash Supressor and similar to soem FAL flash suppresors), and does a pretty good job or reducing muzzle rise and recoil.

I went with the Levang comp which reduces recoil, rise and sound heard by the shooter.

YEah, that is a nice pro of the levang. My Izzy has no real effect on noise heard by the shooter, but I have had others tell me that it makes my gun louder from the sides. :/ A nice pro to the Izzy though is that they are almost always in stock. :D
That is the Izzy "Flash Suppressor", they also have the Izzy "Brake" as a seprate item: http://www.bushmaster.com/shopping/brakes/iz-102660-prbf.asp , given it says Brake it's legal CA :).
Bassplayrr, can I ask how many peel washers you used when you mounted it? I ordered the brake and a single peel washer, but I read it may take more than that to mount it "straight"... It was supposed to be here today with the gun, but its shipping slow so I have to wait until Monday.. :( hehe.

Regarding the installation of the brake.
How does one know if the brake is installed straight and true?

Well, if the bullets don't hit it, then it is straight.:D
Seriously, it is the threads that determine whether it will be on straight or not, provided that you didn't strip them. Easy way to check once the brake is installed, is with a dowel that fits the barrel or a cleaning rod.

I installed a smith enterprise muzzle brake on my CA model, Looks good but with the brake installed it will not fit in the factory carrying case. I cannot say that it really does anything to reduce recoil?? what recoil? Sure looks good though.

Actually, I didn't use the peel washer. As per a friends reccomendation I used the 'lock washer' that Bushmaster sells for their A1 suppressor. It seems to have worked well alowing me to time the brake yet not allowing the brake to come loose or back out. Actually, if you read the paper copy of the bushmaster catalog they sate under the Izzy Brake that a 'lock washer' is required whereas the other brakes specify peel or crush washers, so maybe that's what they had in mind fromt he get-go.

Do they still need to be blind pinned?

Nope. None of the ones mentioned so far have to be pinned.

Comparing my SU-16A without a brake and Bu-buy's CA with a Levang, there is less recoil on his.

C.G. well that must mean the Smith is very ineffective. Or that I dont seem to notice much recoil out of the Keltec. I may have to try something different on the Keltec.

Maybe yours works, I don't have brake on my A model and certainly kicks more than my AR, although nothing to compare with the Beowulf.:D

CA doesn't have any laws regarding threaded barrels on rifiles, only on pistols. The old federal ban effected threaded rifle barrels, which of course doesn't matter at all anymore. CA still has laws banning "Flash suppressors" and "Sound suppressors" tho, so just get something that says "Brake" only on it :).

I went with the EGW gen II compensator. :) They very kindly sent me a letter certifying it is not a flash hider.
