View Full Version : How many mags do you have for your rifle?

I was thinking yesterday of purchasing a new rifle, and it seems like every time I buy a new one of the first accessories I go buy is extra mags. As of late there has been an obvious rise in rebuild kits, and 10/30, 10/20, or various takes on ten round magazines. I have always been under the impression the more extra mags you have the better, but looking at prices for 10 round capacity magazines has me depressed at times, it almost seems if we were out of state the standard capacity mags are cheaper a majority of the time, rifle dependent of course. So it seems with every new rifle purchase I end up buying fewer extra mags as I see no benefit to blowing a bunch of money on mags that really aren't on par with what is available else where. My question to you gentlemen is how many extra mags do you have for your rifles and why?

I have a ton, I haven't really counted... maybe around 40 in 10 round configurations, a few prebans laying around, and 25+ in 30 round pmags in Nevada. The more the merrier.

Make your own 10 rounds mags for much cheaper than the cost of actually buying one.

A buttload of mags, I don't have any 10 round mags. Never had any to begin with so why start now.

No matter the rifle or caliber, buy 'em cheap, stack 'em deep.

I've purchased rifle mags in quantity for many years before any of the rifle or mag bans became an issue - some of my friends thought I was crazy, but some of them were crying about having to pay $50.00 for a 14 mag or 30.00 for a 30 round 16 mag back before the crime bill took effect.

I still take great pleasure in pulling out plastic storage boxs full of mags when the subject comes up, and I will admit to feeling smug about it too.

If you are implying I am DOJ agent I am far from that. I am a broke 25yr old graduate student. I don't care about actual capacity, but I mean how many would you suggest you have for each individual rifle. I guess I didn't word my initial question properly.

This tread has given me something to think about as I only have 1 each for my non-22lr rifles.

I have 3 big cardboard boxes of magazines for rifles and pistols and can only guess at what's in there. It's easier to determine which rifles I have the smallest number of magazines for. They would be a Ruger 10-22 for which I have 3 10 round mags, and a Marlin 795 for which I have 6 10rd mags.

Wow. I was about to say that and then I saw your post.

For every firearm I buy I try to get 10 mags for it. If it comes with 2 then i buy at least 8. There's a few reasons for this. First, mags break more easily then a lot of other gun parts (get crushed, feed lips wrecked, etc), so having extras on hand gives me parts. Second, if (God forbid) I ever need the firearm for a defensive scenario or some mythical SHTF thing, it's nice to have that many. Third, if CA somehow squeezes out another stupid mag capacity law, say, limiting the capacity to 5 rounds instead of 10, I'd like to have plenty of mags that may be grandfathered in like others on this forum that bought 100 AR mags when they ban was going into effect. Fourth, the price of mags will almost always go up. Just the way things seem to go. Especially if they discontinue the firearm- so I buy low.

5 CA legal mags for each rifle I own.Any more than that and it is to easy to waste ammo at the range.

I think his comment was directed at Mr. DOJ agent that may read this thread. If you are a broke 25 year old graduate student, should you be buying books? ;)

Personally, I like to go to the range and not have to reload a magazine while there. So, the more the merrier, but at least 20. There's plenty of time to reload the mags at home while sitting in front of the boob tube watching something uplifting like the news (makes you reload faster).

With books more expensive than rifles these days, mags are a cheaper and more entertaining alternative at times. :p

While I have piles of 20 and 30 round AR mags that I stock-piled in the 80's and 90's, I only buy 4 for any new firearm.

3 for my AR-15. Had 4 for my AK, but I sold it.

Want to get 1-2 more.

I'd get more, but I only have a range that is good for sitting down and shooting.

And I have bullet button. Pointless to have a bunch of mags if you can't do quick reloads or tactical shooting.

If the gun is for having fun at the range you only need a few. If the gun is you home defence or if the world comes to a end gun then I would say get 10 or more. My AR has plenty of mags all loaded with good ammo (this is my goto gun). My other guns like my USC I only have 3 mags cuzz it is just a gun for fun.

I have 6 but I plan to buy some rebuild kits for either my own 10/30s or for future if law is changed or world ends.

Big Fat Zero.

I don't have any guns that accept detachable magazines.

One of these days, I'll have to fix that situation.

Depends on the gun, but generally min of 4. I shoot highpower and need at least four for the rapid fire strings; one empty for slow fire sighters, one loaded with 2 rds, two loaded with 8 rds (an extra in case the first one I grab won't seat during the mag change).

I've only got a couple each for the .22lr bolt rifles, but I don't mind loading those at the range.

I have 4-10/30 AR mags and a 10 rounder that came with my upper. I keep at least 4 mags for each of my firearms, will probably add a couple of the 10/20 Pmags later.
