I have decided that I will either purchase a Poly and have the soft Chinese bolt replaced or purchase a stripped reciever (probably based on a mix of availability and price) and have a rack grade rifle built around it for my Fall project. Who can do the work on the bolt in the Bay Area if I go with the poly ( head spacing ) I would like all the parts to be reparkerized so the rifle looks uniform in appearance. http://calguns.net/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_confused.gif

I do not know of anyone in Bay Area that does scratch M14/M1A builds. There may be a few smiths that can do work on 'em, but for a build up of a receiver I'd look elsewhere - like Fulton Armory.

Even if you could find a bay area smith that could do this, due to Calif. cost structures it'd be pricey...

I called Miltech to ask about m14 work around a week ago and the lady who answered the phone stated that the owner was not available, but that she was sure that they had worked on cust rifles in the past. Thanks Ted, I will call this week and find out.

If there is a Bay Area based M14/M1A smith, they would probably know of one.

Miltech's specialty was (maybe 'is' but I haven't seen their ads for a long time) refurbishing Korean 'Blue Sky' guns...ok in itself. Advertising, though, was a lot like Mitchell's Mausers in that maybe the fact that the gun was a Korean export/import might not have been too very prominent...realize that their guns, like Mitchell's, may be look new but are way overpriced for what you get. I'd take anything they say with a grain of salt.

If you're looking for a smith, see who did the work on maybe some of the top 10 rifles at last year's Camp Perry meet, or this year's if you can stand the wait. California Hi-Power Shooters will definitely have some info...google.

I purchased my last M1A from Frank, and next time I come into the shop I will ask him about the Poly bolt conversion. Thanks http://calguns.net/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Frank is a good guy. Cranky at times, but cool. http://calguns.net/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Miltech is still around, I saw the guy at the range a couple weeks ago with a few carbines and a VERY NICE German K/G43.
