View Full Version : Looking to buy .40...

I live in the LA/Valley area and had a couple of questions. Which range has the widest selection of pistols? The only ones I've been to so far are the firing lines at Burbank and Northridge, and their selections are kinda pathetic.

I'm in the market for a full sized .40 and wanted to try out a wide variety before I make my choice. I've already tried the USP, P226, and glock. The ones I want to try in order is Hi-Power, Baby Eagle, CZ75B, 96FS.

Are there any other recommendations? I'm looking more towards the full steel construction, although I won't completely dismiss a polymer gun (just don't say glocks... they shoot fine, but they UGLY.)

Good luck finding a range that rents a hi power let alone one in 40. I don't know anybody that rents a baby eagle I wonder why. The Beretta should be around but that one might be hard to find too. Beretta 92fs was a range mainstay because the cops shot them and ranges were forced to put up with them. I don't know if the same will hold true with the 96.

LAX range has or had alot of guns to rent I haven't been there for years so I don't know. Oaktree has about 50 or so rentals but no HP or BE for sure I don't know about the others listed.

I don't know a ton about the best ranges much but I went to the LAX range and it was pretty small. The range in OC had a larger seclection but I think you pay per gun.

I fired a glock G35 .40 and it was nice. I just didn't want to get the same thing as my friend so I'm waiting on an HK .45 expert. I like the glock .40 better than the glock .45 I tried which I think was a G21. If I wasen't set on a .22 for my next gun I think it would be a glock.

No saftey, is the one thing I didn't like.

Go with the USP or the SIG. USP if you are wanting a "safety" . SIG if you trust yourself to just de-cock and holster up with your finger outside that trigger guard  I own both and like both. IMHO you can't go wrong with either. I am partial to the HK for personal reasons. My 2 cents.

I have .40s from Sig, H&K and Glock. If picking just one of these I'd go with the Sig brand. For general range and home defense use I like either the P226 or slightly smaller P229. Both are available in all steel, but more commonly found with steel slide and aluminum frame. If I were you I'd look for a slightly used P229 in the $600 price range. I bought the one below for $500, but that was about 7 years ago.

Oak Tree has lots of rentals.

Of my three .40's I prefer the Sig 226, then the CZ 40B, then the Beretta 96. I did put heavier springs (an 18 as opposed to the stock 13LB) and ditched the lame plastic guide rod for a steel one in my Beretta 96, and it is much better now, I must admit. It nearly ended up on the for sale block.

Can't go wrong with a Sig in whatever caliber, baby. They're great guns.

With the exception of a 1911, all of the autoloaders I owned were Sig. They are excellent pistols and in .40 cal, my favorite is the P229. I reckon that I never owned a Glock because I thought they were "ugly" and didn't stack up from a quality POV because of their polymer construction.

At the end of last year, I came to own 3 Glocks in quick succession, a G21, G17 and a G23 (.40 cal). My opinion of them now is radically different. I still like Sigs but if I were to CCW (unlikely here in the SFV), it would be a Glock.

I wouldn't mind owning an M&P or even an XD, but I still have Glock lust.

+1 for Insight Shooting Range in Artesia! The flat rental fee allows you to shoot any and every gun in the cases.

I prefer the 226. Its a solid overall weapon. Very reliable, a tack driver, and looks damn sexy.

I shopped around for mine and got hooked up from a CG member who worked at a gun shop. Saved me some $$$

If you are really interested in test firing go post in the range section asking to test fire in exchange for ammo..or $$$

Man, this place is great. I didn't expect so many responses this quickly.

The P226 was nice, and I liked the heft, but I couldn't shoot it accurately at all. It might have been the size, or the ergonomics of the gun, not sure... My brother on the other hand was grouping it pretty well. The Hk USP was a sweet one though and the main reason why I would consider a polymer gun. The very first time I shot with it, I was making a 2" groupings (good for me). Surprisingly, my brother couldn't shoot this one to save this life. (Both the Sig and the Hk were shot on the same day.)

The XD, I've shot in 9mm and it was nice as well. I might have to take it into consideration if the .40 shoots similarly.

One thing to note, neither of the two firinglines had a 92fs... Quite strange.

do u have a price budget?

I'm thinking around $1k or so. This seems like a good price where it includes many "brand name" guns, but stays just out of most competition guns.

They must have been broken. Of the ranges I've been to the 92fs is the highest fail handgun there. If it weren't for LAPD and LASD useing them as issue guns (that might have changed now) the shooting ranges wouldn't have had them on the wall at all.

Rental guns get a lot of rounds out of them, so most likely they were sent to Beretta for repairs. Go to LA Gun Club in Downtown, they have a HUGE selection.

Lastly, go try out an Hk P2000 in .40S&W, that would be my next gun to buy.

How does the P2k compare to the USP?

Anything HK, rest assured will be held to the high HK quality. My first handgun was a USP 40, followed by a USPc 45, then a USP Expert 45. I highly recommend the USP for reliability, and accuracy. The main difference between the P2000 and the USP are as follows (anyone else feel free to jump in and add) 1) an external safety on the USP (no safety on the P2000) 2) decock on the back of the P2000, whereas it is incorporated on into the safety lever on the USP 3) the P2000 has a slightly longer trigger pull than the standard USP 4) the P2000 is slightly smaller is barrel and frame than the USP 5) The P2000 has interchangeable grips.

If you go with an HK, make sure you shoot the model before buying it. This of course goes for all purchases.

Can't go wrong with any of your choices. I wanna try the p2000 next also. Although You might want to check out Smith and Wessons M&P.

Don't neglect the Walther P99.This one has the AS trigger system (DA/SA).

But a full-size USP would be my HK choice. Came very close last month.
