Personally, I am .22 upper biased, but the cost makes me kinda undecided. Ciener seems to be more convenient and cost effective, but some do not recommend it. What's you take on this?

I would love to get a .22 upper. I think it would be fun and a cheaper way to practice shooting your ar.

I think it depends on what you're looking for.

If you want to get more familiar with an AR-15, then go for the ceiner or the .22 upper.

If you want to pretend that you're not in CA, then go for the dedicated upper and build a dedicated 'evil' rimfire black rifle.

If you just want to punch as small a hole in paper, then go for the 10/22. Just be warned, a target 10/22 is as much of a money sink as a tacticool AR.

I have/had a Ceiner kit. Recently I bought a 10/22 and will probably be selling my Ceiner kit. I considered the Spike's dedicated upper but realized that I'd end up spending the same on a dedicated 22 as I would on a 10/22 with an upgraded barrel and stock. (Optics weren't considered as I would be buying for either build.)

Pros:
-AR platform you are used to
-Cheap to purchase and shoot.

Cons:
-Since I don't have a dedicated upper, my optics aren't zeroed for it. Have to switch out each time.
-The original magazine sucks a lot.
-.22lr is dirty ammo and can gunk up the gas return tube. Make sure you use copper jacketed ammo to minimize this.

The upper option give you one functional firearm. The 10/22 gives you two functional firearms. IMO the more functional firearms the better:D.

Everyone should own at least one 10/22. Not only are they more upgradable than a Honda Civic, but they are great guns to teach first time shooters on (not intimidating like a big EBR).

For me the 10/22 never gets boring, no matter what I am going to the range for at least one of my 10/22s comes with me.

That being said, I plan on getting a dedicated .22 upper for my AR as well. Just for the fun factor.

Here are my 10/22s.

And here is what they can do...

Ahhhh but wait......more firearms is better! I have a 10/22 target that I have worked on and it is a great shooter. If you want accuracy for target and varmint it's the way to go.

I have all three and out of them I love the Spikes upper. Like I have said several times before it's the only rifle I take to the range every time.

The ceiner would be on the bottom of my list. It won't be as accurate as a dedicated .22 upper, nor as reliable although YMMV. Lastly, shooting .22 out of a .223 barrel will foul it up pretty quickly.

I went with the .22 dedicated upper route, also considering a 10/22. Personally, I find a higher "fun" factor with a .22 AR, plus the pistol grip is more comfortable to me than the rifle stock.

While shooting is fun, building a 10/22 or dedicated AR is probably the most fun part.

Couldn't agree with you more. But I buy them to shoot and not to seat in the safe.

I think, I'm gonna go with 10/22. The main reason is its high customization and a possibility of having various stock configurations (rifle, ar, thumbhole, etc.)
So is it a good idea to begin with the most basic one or do I need something fancier to begin modding? What mods would you recommend first?

@ Black Majik: Speaking of a pistol grip, have you checked this stock?

Oooh. A fellow lefty. Where'd you get the stocks?

I picked up the Revolution Yukon (bottom - Black/Grey) from ShootersDiscount.com (http://www.shootersdiscount.com/cart/index.php?_a=viewProd&productId=61) for $125.

The ambidextrous Boyds SS Evolution (Top - Natural) was a B-Day gift from a buddy of mine. He picked it up off E-Bay for REAL cheap, but they can also be ordered directly from Boyds Brothers (http://www.boydsgunstocks.com/Replacement-Stocks-for-the-Ruger-10-22-s/40.htm). Looks like they are having a sale right now. I received mine unfinished, and after a light sanding and 5 coats of Tru-Oil it turned into what you see here.

I actually am right handed, but do to catching an asphalt roofing shingle with my face , I am blind in my right eye. :Pirate: So i have to shoot rifles left handed.

So, you don't care much for search, I take it?

Every thread you start and question you post has been answered dozens of times - they're some of the most asked questions.

Mag release, bolt release and stock are the only REQUIRED mods. After that I'd do barrel & trigger.

rimfirecentral.com is the place to go for 10/22.
