Hello Calgunners,

Thank you for taking the time to read this. This is my first attempt at trying to build an upper and I have already ran into a problem. I bought a Sundevil MFG Stripped billet upper receiver, and a Fortis REV rail. I wanted to see how they sit together so I attempted at holding them together to get an idea if they would be flush. I don't know if I am holding it wrong or if installed properly with barrel nut they will fit flush but from what I see this is definitely not going to work.

It seems there are two tabs on the Fortis rail that slide into the upper receiver. When those tabs are slid in the rail sits to high, so the pictannies on the upper and on the rail dont sit flush. Here is a pic I took of this

When I try to hold the tops flush with each other there is a gap. because the tabs can not slide into the upper properly.

I guess my question is Is there something I am doing wrong, or do I need to purchase another upper? I saw some people running a Sundevil upper and Fortis rail together but For some reason mine is not working out. If any one has a solution that would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

It is quite common for billet uppers to be thicker.
The tabs on the rail are setup for use with a forged receiver.
You will need to file open the rail to fit on your oversized upper.

Wouldn't that scratch my receiver ? I don't want it to look scratched it's a 200 dollar upper

You file the INSIDE of the tabs on the rail.
You won't see the filed area once the rail is installed.

lol. QOTD

I take it you aren't planning to shoot it either, right? We wouldn't want it to "look" shot either, would we?

ETA: You bought a non-standard upper and a rail built specifically for a standard upper. Like Randall said, You will have the shave those notches (potentially all the way off) to make that rail fit.
