View Full Version : Project Polished AR - Complete! Pics post #31
have always wanted polished receivers for an AR
with my lower on my pistol in raw aluminum, i had been leaning towards cerakoting. But now that i have a dedicated lower for my 10.5" 300BLK, and after discovering Mother's Mag amd Aluminum polish, i bit the bullet and started stripping down my upper.
After some research, i soaked the upper for what seemed like eternity in Purple Power.... no luck. A dremel and wire wheel and i got most of the finish off. Tested an area for polishing and so far, so good.
Will have to sand it down to get it smooth, but it should look gaudy and obnoxious when I'm done :)
FYI this is going on my 6.75" AR Pistol

have also switched optics (i think its a vortex sparc, can't remember) and added the caa saddle.
300BLK will be all black, uses a 12" mi ss12g2 rail, and extended buffer, cheap bushnell scope with BDC, and slim KAK flashcan

Sounds cool. Maybe gold plate the safety, mag release, bolt release, trigger, and add a gold plated rail section on each side. Very cartel. Would look pretty sexy though. Fasten a Jesus Malverde medallion front of the magwell too.
rosary sling and was going to have the comp airbrushed like a Jesus candle.....

In the old days we used to strip anodizing off bike parts with EZ_off oven cleaner.
It's caustic as hell, so wear gloves. Nitrile, not latex (or your wife/mom's thick kitchen cleaner gloves :D ).

Sweet AR pistol, the lower already looks like its made of silver, lol
thanks guys, i read about EZ-off, greased lightning, etc., but Purple Power is all i had at the house.
Don't think I'm actually do a rosary sling, lol.
The lower needs very little work, I prepped and polished it about a year ago, so i just need to go back and hit it with more polish once I'm done with the upper.

Id be pimping out my pistol. LOL
little update, have been busy with work so I didn't do anything until today.
sprayed it down with EZ OFF, threw it in my tumbler with crushed english walnut and purple power lol. wire wheel made easy work out of it after that

spot tested some polish, looks good but still has a texture. will have to sand it down smooth :(

other side is 99% de-anodized.. 2 little crevices I cant reach with the wire wheel

a raw upper would have been a lot easier....
once this is done I'll run it as is, and do the handguard and buffer tube in the future

I know easy off oven cleaner, the yellow can removes anodizing. Not sure about hard anodizing though
I think I'd try to find someone with a Glass beader.

I have one.
Of course you want to make sure that you don't remove the type III anodizing from any holes or mating surfaces.

I did my lower which was raw. I did some sanding and tried to get it smooth. Just don't have the patience or time. So I polished it as it was.
haha, the stripping is done now. if ibwere to do it again, I would wither start raw, or blast it.
eazy off i think did the trick, but itnturns the alum black which I thought was the anodize.
my lower is raw, which I think is much more sensitive to not having a hardcoat. some research hypothesizes that oxidization serves the same purpose, not sure i buy that. so I use KNS anti-rotational pins.

I once completely stripped the ano off a KAC rail down to raw aluminium with some concentrated citrus cleaner that I bought from a dollar store.
Dont ask me if it was what I intended to do, but the point is I did it chemically for a dollar.

just picked up 120ml of "ape escape" (banana/caramel/graham cracker) from vapokick, $20 free ship. not the greatest, but good enough for ADV... had to steep on heat for about 4 hours. went ahead and ordered another 120ml of "cloud crunch", a fruity pebbles/fruit loops flavor. have never been into the fruit flavors, but I need a change from my usual rich/savory juice...

yeah, i know. the flats are easy, but the corners are horrible! 50% though? I would say 70% lol. I would be 100% satisfied with say 90% complete.
it's also a time issue, my wife would kill me if i spent all my time sanding that thing, and I'm not about to turn it into a long project.
Plus, it's a range toy that I don't want to baby. Hell, even my macho hands leave swirls!

I was going for brokeback mountain, but hey....
You must have some Cartel blood or Arab Prince genes.
Definitely a cartel, dictator, or pimps gun.
I got the idea from when I first got into guns, always thought it would be cool to have a big SS or Nickel pistol... like a 1911 or something traditional like that...
I have my X-six and a 460v which are both huge and SS... but satin.... my Colt Combat Elite is blued... so I still had this longing for something truly... not tacky... just gaudy, but in a good way.
Not sure I'm a fan of the Cartel... def. not a dictator. Pimp? When i think of pimp i think of a scrawny car salesman look-alike who can't fight and mistreats women lol. Arab Prince? Prince Ali, fabulous he, ali-a-babwa.... nope.
Maybe more like a modern-day dirty harry. Or maybe just that crazy neighborhood gun-nut with flashy and obnoxious taste
Still undecided about the Handguard.... maybe the comp and the buffer tube?

Must.... Keep...... Going! Whole thing, even the swivels. Then, gold inlays with jewels. Im not joking.
Now joking. Put servos in the bipod, which has 180 spoke Daytons, to simulate hydros when the gun is cooling off 😎
If any gun is gaudy, this would be it. The nerve!

Dude, kick up the sand paper to 1200, 1500, 2000, then jump into a course polishing compound and then a fine polish compound.... Then throw that metal polish.... It's easy if you got a buffer....

Cerakote does make a clear finish. Not sure how it will hold up to a non-blasted aluminum surface though. Try it and tell us how it goes!

Nice! I wasn't aware of that.
I imagine it adheres fine to polished aluminum. That's probably why they gave it a gloss finish unlike the flat finishes of the rest of their product line. It looks like they made the clear for polished metal parts used in automotive engine bling.
