Hello....

I was cleaning my M44 mosin and I went as far as to remove the firing pin to clean, after I re-assembled I noticed that the firing pin was sticking out a lot further then before. I inserted an empty cartridge to see what would happen and the result was the entire primer was sunk and not sitting flush.

This is my first time completely disassembling the gun, and I hope I didn't ruin it. Thank you!

You can adjust the firing pin depth, but you need the mosin tool to gauge firing pin depth properly.

Checkout surplusrifle.com. There's a mosin bolt disassembly write up that will show you what you need to do.

don't worry you didn't ruin it, just take out the bolt, push it down against a piece of wood, and twist it a couple of times (I forget in what direction) to make the firing pin recede a little bit more

Thanks for the info! Teardrop?

Its the tool used for measuring firing pin protrusion. It usually comes with the accessories and its shaped like a teardrop.

in addition. there should be a score on the back of the bolt. the screw should match the score mark.

check out this article, it explains how to adjust the firing pin (you'll need the aforementioned teardrop tool).

there's a couple of videos on youtube demonstrating field stripping a bolt and setting the fire pin.
