There's A First Time For Everything...

...and hopefully, this will be the LAST TIME for this:

Yup! You guessed it! A split stock!!!

I didn't drop it, didn't kick it, didn't throw it at anybody. I was just up at the range shooting it and this is what happened. Once I disassembled the rifle, I found that it had actually split in half...

I'm going to call Ruger tomorrow, but the rifle is 16 years old. I doubt there will be anything that they can do for me...

Any stock suggestions? I'm looking at a Boyd's laminated...

That blows man. How could that happen? Crap wood or what.

Send the stock to Dean. He can fix it good as new..

Sometimes when they cut the wood, it just gets cut with the grain...

...or there was a knot in the wood where a branch once exsisted. It happens but usually NOT TO ME!!!

Wood is funny, you dont have to do anything to it and it could crack like that. If the wood is kiln dried it could have had a flaw from the start and then one day whammo! Ruger has a great warranty department. Have a dealer call if they give you grief.

Yeah, but 6 of those years I was in the Air Force playing with cooler toys. It sat in my Dad's closet for the better part of 5 years, or so...

This was the first time its been to the range, in a while. Still it's had a few thousand rounds through it....

5 or 6 deer hunts. I love the rifle and I'd never sell it. It was my first deer rifle. Tom Ruger personally signed the manual (that I can't find).

                  Well...

I just got off the phone with Ruger and they said about what I thought they'd say: "Sorry, we can't help you."

Honestly, I don't blame Ruger at all. They're gun makers, not lumber experts. It could happen to ANY manufacturer's rifle with a wood stock. I still love my M77 and wouldn't hessitate to recommend it to anyone...

The only thing I did think was interesting was that the Customer Service person from Ruger said that not only could they not replace my stock but they didn't even have the M77 stocks available for the original 77R rifles, prior to the Mark IIs. I was hoping I could get an OEM laminated stock, or something but no luck...

So, I've been looking online for a replacement and I love what I'm seeing from Boyd's but it looks like all of their stocks are for the Mark IIs. That doesn't leave me a whole lot of choices. Ram line or Bell and Carlson appear to be my only options at this point and I wasn't really wanting to put a composite stock on my rifle...

Anyone have any ideas of other places?

I've checked Cabelas and Midway already...

I'd be tempted to glue it and drive some long brass screws and then cut them flush inside and out til you can find a suitable replacement.

Could be there was an interference fit where it shouldn't have been and the stock cracked over time due to recoil and thermal mismatch between wood and steel.

I'd really like to find myself a nice laminated stock. Boyd's has a pattern I really like with three colors; tan, green and a reddish brown. I think that would be nice...

For whatever reason, I can't see the pictures of your rifle. What kind is it? I may be able to come up with a used stock for you.

Forget it. I reopened the thread and saw the pictures. Sorry, I thought it might have been a 10-22 or a mini 14/30. I doubt I could wrangle up a stock for that your rifle quickly.
