Keep in mind that if you have ARs (or anything with a pistol grip for that matter) and/or scoped rifles, the number of long guns you can keep in a safe is about half of what's advertised for that safe. Pistol grips and scopes cause the guns to stick out farther and use up a lot more space.

I bought an old gym locker... about 2 feet wide with pad lock. I keep my long guns in there and remove the bolts. I keep em in another safe. Saves me ALOT of space.
As far as ammo... I use a set of three old metal 4 drawer file cabinets. Put em on rollers and they wrok great. throw a cable lock on there and you are set.Comment

I have one of those honeywells, they were on sale at Costco for $350, and I've seen a place selling them for $300. That is the type of safe I had in mind when I was comparing them to a gun cabinet. I would say for that price range, they're a decent deal. I haven't seen many safes in that price range that comes with an electronic lock. It makes a good secondary safe, or a stand in until you get something better.
It's kinda cheaply made, there is a lot of play on the dial, and it's not something that would stand up to any serious break in attempt, but I think it would be a big step up from a regular gun cabinet. If you bolt it down properly, my personal opinion is that it would be a good deterrent to a casual thief. They definitely won't be getting in there without a good prybar.
I second the thought on getting a used safe. You can sometimes find some pretty good used ones for about the same price as a cheap new one. The only problem is moving itLast edited by ducktapeguy; 10-04-2008, 11:00 PM.Comment

Thanks for the input. I'll likely grab one of the 6742Ds this week. It's still a "stand in" until circumstances and budget change, but since it appears to be more robust than a RSC or riffle cabinet for not much more in cost, it makes sense for now.

For your price range Sentry safe makes some decent safes. But a step up in quality is Liberty Safe, lowes had one for about 450 but you can easily talk them down from that kind of stuff. i worked at a lowes for almost 2 years and now work in a locksmith/safe shop.ΜΟΛΩΝ ΛΑΒΕPSN Id: FNChesterCertified Welder-ANSI/AWS D1.2 1F/G, 2F/G, 3 F/G up to 1/2 plate aluminium GTAW. &

Well,
I picked up my Sisco/Protector/Honeywell/Brinks 6742D today. $150 cash OTD was too good to pass up. Included all the gun racks, extra shevles, and a lockable ammo container. I have to spend some time tomorrow setting up the interior for it's new inhabitants

Sometimes it's not what you know, but who you know
One of my classmates (working towards my MBA/IS) works for Sisco. Mine was a floor model, but has a full warranty etc. so I'm a happy camper.
