Does gas pressure have an effect on recoil-operated actions? Are you shooting the commercial ammo in a M1919? Maybe the slower powder in the commercial loads causes the bullet to accelerate at a different rate and this effects the timing of the M1919. Slow powder might have lower pressure at first, but then the pressure builds as the bullet moves down the bore. I really have no idea how the M1919 works though.

I know I can buy the Greek M2 from CMP for fairly cheap, but even the good folks at CMP admit that 5-15% of the ammo will be corroded or otherwise unshootable. I don't mind paying a little extra for current production ammo that I won't have to question when I take it out of the box.
Reload your own using your GI brass , use hornaday 150gr fmj bt bullets sold by www.midwayusa.com, IMR4895,& a primer.I've loaded 100's of rounds of mil brass for matches.I bought an LE Wilson primer punch,a wilson case trimmer & a primer pocket reamer to remove the mil crimp plus wilson gages.I reload with a Dillon RL550B plus powder measure & 5-0-5 scale. If you want a copy of the 3/86 American Rifleman article "Reloading for the M1 Rifle" send me your email & I'll send it to you it has a lot of worthwhile information about garands.

You should also lurk on Gunbroker (or other) for M2 '06. As my range does not allow magnetic ammo (Angeles), I have bought plenty there, searching f1rst for the term "magnet" or "magnetic." Sellers who have it do advertise that as well.
        Example: http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/Vie...Item=112273888
I think I've got about 2K rounds stocked, so loading my own will be the next step.

But don't take my word for it, go research it for yourself. Battlerifles.com often has some very good topics about the issue as it relates to damaging Garand Op Rods.

          Brownells sells the adjustable plug

Fulton Armory also sells a gas plug with different-sized 'jets'.
As a technical person, and a man of science, I have purchased a wide range of commercial ammo, from different manufactures and bullet weights.

I bought Den 42 & 43 loaded M2 (corrosive salt in the priming mixture)in the 1980's and still have 3 ammo boxes of it.If anyone wants the 3/86 Am Rifleman article "Reloading for the M1 Rifle" send me your email & I'll send it to you it has lots of useful information. That's the data I used to load my mil brass for garand matches using Hornaday 150gr FMJ BT(www.midwayusa.com), cci primers,IMR 4895.

I had the same concern awhile back. The solution is to just plan ahead and stock up from CMP. Just got my Lake City .30-06 today from CMP
