Default scope recommendations for .22

Just DROS'ed a sweet little Remington 552 to launch a jihad against the ground squirrel population that is expanding on my property.

Any recommendations or words of advice for scopes? Don't need a Trijicon, but I hate spending money only to regret it and spend more to get it right the second time.

Input appreciated.

I have found that the Tasco Pronghorn works vey good on rimfires and doesn't cost very much. somewhere around 20 to 40 dollars.

I got a Barska "Hunster" its a 3-9x40. I use it on my 10/22 and it is a pretty good scope for a cheap one. I am able to hit steel at 400yds with it.\
it cost $40 at big 5

Smile thanks

thanks to everyone for the suggestions... after looking online (more time spent on that than I should have) I was narrowing it down to the Tasco Pronghorn and a Simmons... anyone have a thought on the products from BSA?

Check the warranty on your Baska. If it fails you will pay half the price of the scope over again.

I've had good luck with Simmons scopes.
Good value for the money.

Check out the Mueller scopes. I just built up a 17 hm2 Savage and slapped a Mueller Tactical 8x25x44 on it and it rocks. Check my posts, there are some photos there. Great for seeing those little rats. As an alternative there is a Bushnell 3200 Elite for sale on the board for $150 I believe. Not a bad scope for the price. And finally, if you need any help with the ground squirrels let me know. Im right around the corner from you and would love to introduce them to my new 17hm2

Yeah, I'd go with a Mueller APV or a Weaver V series over a Tasco or Simmons. Sure, a .22 is inexpensive and has low recoil, but that's no reason to put a bottom-end scope on it. Even if they hold up, the optics are still mediocre.

Here's another great .22 scope for a reasonable price:
http://catalogs.natchezss.com/april08/full.asp?page=2

Bushnell Elite 3200 2-7x32 Firefly - $130

Good, solid scope, decent glass, and a nice size for a .22.

The Muellers are what everyone on rimfire central are all ga ga for.

They work well.

I don't like high magnification on plinkers. If you're punching paper, though...

I REALLY like the Turkey reticled 1.25-5X scope that tiger222 has for sale right now if you're looking for a plinker.

I have a simmons 4.5-14x40 on my Kimber .22 and really like it. I primarily shoot paper targets and shoot-n-see's at 100 yards and at max magnification I don't need a spotting scope to see where I'm hitting.

Hey Maxicon,

Your suggestion on the Bushnell Elite 3200 2-7x32 Firefly - $130
looks like a good one.... THANKS! I'll look into that one a bit closer for my .22 lever-gun.
I like the idea of an illuminated recticle!

I was leaning toward a Nikon Prostaff 2x7x32, (great reviews, lifetime warranty).
ebay @ $108 shipped. http://www.cabelas.com/prod-1/0006464711747a.shtml

Thanks!

Was thinking about the Mueller APV also... and Yes, the guys on rimfirecentral.com rave about it.

Word of caution however... I read some posts claiming that some of the guys RAVING 'on-and-on about it' actually were on Mueller's payroll.
That being said, I have zero experience with the scope...
