Default 300 Win Mag

I have a 300 Win Mag in my future. Just out of curiosity what other calibers could it be re-barreled to that would be useful for long range (as in past 1000) precision fun.

My plan is to shoot out the factory barrel and re-barrel it but I am not sure if I should keep it a 300 Win Mag or do something else. It would not be a competition rig and barrel life is not a worry for me. I would like to hit targets 1200 or more.

I'd keep it as is. It will get to 1200 with no problems.

long action calibers

270 Win.
30-06 Springfield
300 Win Mag.
7mm Rem. Mag.
7mm Rem.
300 Rem.
7mm Rem. Ultra Mag.
300 Rem. Ultra Mag.

but as suggested by wildcard, i would leave it as a 300winmag.

300 Winmag is my go to gun for just about everything.

Leave it or go with an ultra mag I have a 338 Ultra that will reach out to 1200 and still knock over a beast.

The 300 win mag has a .532 boltface so unless you have a new bolt or a Savage that you can change the bolt head on you have to use another magnum cartridge.

The 375 H&H length (like the RUMs) cartridges will require action work to open up the feed rails and the magazine length and ejection port.

The easiest conversion that will only require the barrel to be changed will be to the 264 Mag, 7 Mag and 338 Mag

a 300 win, .338 lupua, etc is like the maximum distance shooting one can go staying within practicality. how many places do you know that you can go that far out to shoot?

I didn't think you could run a 338 lapua magnum in the action.

Take a look at the 300 Rem Ultra Mag if you reload.

I enjoy having my face as sexy as it is so I think I won't do that. Maybe tax time next year I'll build a 338 or get my ferret 50 upper in 338 when they are available again.

7wsm thats it! I wouldnt do 300wm. My 30-06 shoots 210gr VLDs as fast as you can shoot them out of you win mag. I have cronied them at 2900fps, ask Bill he did it for me.

Or build a 30-06 and have Randy spec it out like mine.

Hey...what's up with that? Don't forget 8mm Remington Magnum. Compare those ballistics!

Are you guys still planning on coming up to the spot after APS? They say 40% chance of snow for us. The spot will probably be fine, but windy.

i'm good for whatever. i just need to get nayt's rifle tested, and do some shooting before the match. got to get that rust off my fingers.

i'll go along with the general consesus.

how about we all meet at aps, and then take it from there? worse comes to worse and it rains, we have aps to shoot. you can zero in, practice offhand, and do some 5 dot drills.

I was listing the cartridges that would drop with just a barrel change.
