Default Review of Arms Unlimited NiB Bolt Carrier Group

I just ordered up one of these for a friend of mine- here's my review.

It ships in a plain white cardboard box- no packing inside, but no shipping damage resulted.

First of all, they claim a tool steel ejector. The one we received is clearly MIM. Minus point. I told my friend to run it until it breaks- lifetime warranty. If it doesn't break, even better.

The website photo seems to show a smooth shiny (like WMD, Fail Zero) unit, the one we received is matte. Not a + or -, but different. I would prefer shiny, my friend doesn't care. I suppose matte may hold grease/lube better. It slides more roughly in my upper than my early ICE BCG (when they were made nicer). Take a look at their site and you decide if it looks matte or not:

http://www.armsunlimited.com/AU-AR15...r15-bcg-nb.htm

The bolt is supposed to be tested, but shows no such markings. They claim the finish covered over the marks- so you'll have to take it on faith.

Staking appears sufficient, and machining on the bolt and carrier itself looks good. The carrier key is not MIM, but I can't tell if it's cast or machined.
It does include the extractor spring and assists listed. Firing pin looks like a standard hard chrome unit.

The true test will come when we shoot the thing- right now I'd give it a 4/5.

It looks remarkably similar to the early AIM surplus $99 BCG. If you're not in a hurry, I'd wait and get the AIM surplus $129 one.

(NOTE: the gas rings in the photo are MAcFarland 1 piece, not included with the carrier group. I also ordered up a Colt tool steel extractor for my friend as a spare- I really don't trust MIM in this application.)

For comparison, see:

http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/s...d.php?t=887449 (see post#32)

http://www.aimsurplus.com/product.as...ddd01-17898969

Of course, they're now sold out, but I would prefer the Gen 2 AIM BCG if you don't mind waiting for it to come back in stock.

If you decide to run an AU BCG, I would recommend adding this:

YES!

We should be trying this out shortly, I'll post an update. My buddy his access to an indoor range which allows .223.

My only concern is the extractor- if it holds up in his AR pistol, we won't worry about it.

Looks to be pretty well made and with a limited life time warranty to boot. It can't hurt to try one.

Any Updates? Get a chance to fire it?

This AU BCG seems to be a good deal (has all the right specs)

Does anyone have experience using one?

The finish looks bead blasted. I have a couple of NiB BCG's from different sources and they came with a more glossy smooth looking finish.

Yeah its odd on their site it looks super glossy like chrome.
It also has an angled profile?

I guess with a price this low, something has to give

It also looks like it has angled cuts on the front of the carrier by the bolt unlike the one you have. Looks like how a lot of the .308 bolt carriers are.

My friend has fired it in his AR pistol- I told him to leave on the MIM extractor since they claim a lifetime guarantee.

So far so good- the finish isn't flaking off like some of the AIM surplus units out there. He ran it pretty hard too.

It looks NOTHING like my other NiB groups though, the goldish color looks much closer to my old rewelded Colt electroless nickel carrier.
