Default What's up with the supply of powder?

Before the new year, they were coming in every other week, popular powders and everything, after the new year NOTHING

what's up!?

Got to get it when the gettin is good.

I don't think the price has risen enough to ward off the hoarders and flippers.

Until then, you gotta jump on it when you see it...

Last I checked its still the same as New Years, still coming in in splurges but 10 upon thousands of people keep sucking them up with in the hour.

I'm just waiting for the guys with 90+ lbs of powder and supplies finally say enough and everyone gets stocked up and stops buying so this market can get back to normal.

Yeah, I just got 18 lbs of mixed powders, H110, Leverlution, IMR 4320 and IMR 8208...

I thumbed my nose at 700-X, but I could have gotten it for $138/8lb bottle...

I thought I read that the Clays powder plant and another in New Zealand burned down. That could put a crimp in supply. Oh a side note, I wonder how the powder distributors are doing without powders to sell?

At least the Anzacs seem to get it, Scandanavians not so much. I've seen popular Hodgdon powders pop up more often than Alliant or Viht powders.

If I was down to 90 lbs of powder, I'd be panic buying.

The Clay's plant fire story in Australia was FUD. Can't speak of New Zealand but probably BS as well.

I haven't looked for powder in quite a while but I was having good luck with Gamaliel.

I would guess the large rise in reloading and hoarders, along with the need to supply bullets to troops is a big strain on the limited source of manufactures, With amount of shooters that are coming into this hobby buying anything they can get there hands on, has clearly been seen by the way .22 ammo is no longer always available on the shelf of stores and even brass manufactures are not making less common rounds like 30 rem, to focus on the demand for .223/5.56. Its just a rise in demand and no new companies coming up to fill the gap in my opinion

There is no shortage for the military
All that xm193 and xm855 these hoarders buy up are rejects

There is never a shortage of ammo for our boys overseas, the lake city plant runs 24/7 along with other plants if needed

My main question is the supply of powder, especially pistol powder

The owner of the ammo-only(well and components)-shop that I bought some powder and primers at said that Obama and his droogs are limiting imports that used to be a full shipping containers to 1/2 shipping containers full of powder. I don't know how true this is...

California is the eighth largest economy in the world. When we get nervous everything dries up . The rest of the country follows suit. Our concern is the system violating or 2A Rights because of goofballs & criminals hurting other Americans . Thus panic buying & it builds on itself across the country.Friends don't let friends panic buy!

Yes but a lot of those are either unpopular or specialized. I didn't look too closely but I'd bet not one of those powders is suitable for pistol cartridges.

Hodgdon has a statement on their website to explain the powder shortage. Essentially they are turning it out as fast as they can with the existing plants. They have to forecast demand years in advance. They have seen bubbles in demand before and I don't know, but I don't think they are planning to add manufacturing capacity due to this shortage, which I think they may believe is temporary.

Sorry, accidentally erased what you wrote here JMP. I hit the edit button instead of the quote button. My bad.

CSA shoots a lot of .50 BMG. With those, I bet 90lbs of powder just isn't that much.

I checked the list @ gunbot and pistol powder is for magnum.
I noticed that buying online adds about $50 to your purchase too.

Megamillions of rounds bought by DHS and other agencies is bound to have some effect. Those are not Pentagon orders, so the supplies come from the private sector capacity.

I bought 8 pounds of powder when I only wanted 4 and some primers I didn't need. Sold them right away at cost. Final cost to me; $23.90 a pound for my 4 pounds... due to spreading the hazmat and shipping over the extra powder and primers.

Something to consider. $23.90 is less than the local gunshop price and it is with paying hazmat.

I tried an 'unpopular' powder (I say that because I've never noticed anyone here mention using it... anyone anywhere actually...) when I first started (it was all I could get). The powder maker had load data up on the web. It worked great. Makes a black smoke which might be why people don't like it (stuff looks dirtier than something with a lighter smoke). Shot very well though.... would have no problems using it again.

Yes, the majority of the powders on Gunbot are for large rifle or black powder but there are a few for pistol if you hunt.

Me too I bought some AA2700 and even though it's regularly in stock now, probably because it's not so popular, I happen to think it's great! Hey it works! Shot it through an Arisaka T99 and it seemed to burn clean, didn't foul up the gun hardly at all after about 50 rounds, and I got some pretty good groupings.

http://www.gamaliel.com/Hornady/H802...performanc.asp

Hey! Why do they advertise this crap and then FAIL to put .223 in the mix for their powders? I see superformance powder all over the place! I did not touch it though because I did not know that it was used for .223... wtf?

Hornady blends the Superformance ball powders to match a specific cartridge for their factory loads. From what I've read about it, Hornady has about a dozen blends for their factory rifle loadings.

The Superformance powder being sold to reloaders is not the same powder Hornady uses for the 223 Remington Superformance ammo. Superformance reloading powder has a burning speed in the IMR 4831 range. It's too slow for the 223 Remington

I've been able to secure powder for my rifle loads but haven't even come close to finding some w231 titegroup or bullseye. Maybe at the gun show if I can get there early enough to be at the front of the line.
